Summary

Iranian pop star Amir Hossein Maghsoudloo, known as Tataloo, has been sentenced to death for blasphemy after the supreme court overturned a prior five-year prison sentence.

Tataloo, who had been living in Istanbul since 2018, was extradited to Iran in 2023 and has since been detained.

He also faces charges of promoting “prostitution” and spreading “propaganda” against the Islamic Republic.

The verdict is not final and can still be appealed.

Once a figure courted by conservatives, Tataloo gained fame for his controversial music and tattoos.

Turkey extradites to Iran? That seems like something that wouldn’t help join the EU.

Edit: I should specify that I’m being somewhat sarcastic. My comment is technically true but in fact this extradition policy is largely irrelevant to real-world diplomacy.

After they were refused repeatedly and the last attempt really highlighted how common racism is in the EU I cannot blame them for not wanting to join anymore.

I’d say that Turkey has stopped seriously trying to join the EU, but that’s because I don’t know what they want or don’t.

My comment was intended to sound cynical, but I totally failed to actually make it sound that way. (I edited it just now in an attempt to fix that.) Europe’s relationship with Turkey is dominated by geopolitical and economic concerns, not moral ones.
