I was born in a Pacific Islander community that had a pidgin that was a hybrid between Tahitian and English. When spoken, Tahitian is straightforward, but written Tahitian, even (or especially) in English, is (or was) a literary frontier, in the sense where if you asked how to spell something, nothing was firm.
