It can’t really be fully predicted how intense the migration, but we are expecting quite a bit… if previous platforms (especially twitter) are any trend to look towards, expect traffic to intensify a bit. Probably even more than it already has.

For those coming from reddit Please bear with us as well, as well as the rest of the lemmyverse. If you’re new to lemmy and the fediverse as platform, you may be confused as how to best find communities right now. lemmyverse.net/communities is a good start, make sure to tick the NSFW community display option. Welcome to the community, and bear with us due to the limitations lemmy currently has as a platform. Things are improving, but for the time being our current content policy is quite strict. It is temporary, and will be elaborated more so in the future as lemmys mod tools improve. There will be a link added to the sidebar that provides info as to why this is.

Be mindful of making sure your NSFW posts are properly tagged as well.

Reddit refugee here, and very lost. My understanding is that I only need 1 account, and can, from that one account see and do everything across the instances, fediverse, whatever.

When I search for communities other than NSFW I don’t get any results.

Is this NSFW an isolated instance? Are there any quirks I’m not aware of? Am I misunderstanding something?

Posts and threads from one instance do not necessarily show up when reading from another instance.

Let’s take my experience with anime for example.

The biggest anime community that I can find is [email protected]

If I’m logged into lemmy.ml I can see all the threads and posts

If I’m logged into kbin.social, even though I can see and subscribe to the [email protected] community, I only see a fraction of the threads.

This is doubly true for nsfw material. Although free adult material and discussion plays a huge role in attracting new users, many Lemmy instances opted to de-federate from nsfw instances such as lemmynsfw.com, so you can’t even see any communities there. You need an account there on lemmynsfw.com to view all the content.

But as previously, even if an instance you’re logged into isn’t de-federated from an nsfw instance, your local instance gets few threads and posts from that server anyway.

Why is distribution of content so poor across the lemmyverse?

I am not sure exactly how the architecture works, but someone made a flowchart of all the hoops that must be jumped through for content to reach another instance: https://lemmy.ml/post/1411329

With defederation left and right (basically isolation but a bit more complex) the 1 account rule isn’t necessarily true but starting out it’s enough if you have one acc and then when you hit a block (you want to find a community/instance which you know exists but doesn’t show up from your instance) then you can start thinking about making alt accounts on said instances.

Currently I have 3 accs because the instances defederated each other and there is no other way for me to view some communities like this. But the android app (jerboa as well but I recommend Liftoff) makes switching between accs easy.

        Appreciate the reply.

So if I’m understanding correctly it seems that this instance I’m on, lemmynsfw.com is defederated from lemmy.radio or something?

I guess holding hands with a nfsw instance might not be popular?

I guess making an account on a larger more general instance might be the go.

Yeah, I think having your primary account on a nsfw, or an otherwise controversial instance is a bad idea (unless you mostly only care about the communities on that instance).

I think a lot of people have alt accounts on this, and their main account on something like lemm.ee, reddthat.com, etc.

Yup. This is the way, for now, at least.
