Reddit users thevincentasteroid and MMD3_ posted about an auto-playing video ad (with sound) on the home screen. The ad is for Chicken Tender Wraps from Carl’s Jr. When it begins auto-playing, it pushes all the other UI elements out of focus and goes almost full-screen, returning to the home screen after it has played through once.
I’m not ok with ads; I would prefer not having ads, especially with a product that costs money; however, the alternative devices on the market hardly can offer a similar experience and they usually cost 2 or 3 times the price.
You show me youtube videos of a working streaming device that costs $50, supports 4K, has a remote, voice search, support multiple codecs for different services, smart home control ability, receives security / updates in general, able to suggest movies or shows based on services subscribed to, able to tell you which services a movie or show is on (not just on subscribed), allows buying movies and having access to those movies on all family member phones / devices, provides 116 free streaming channels built-in, an additional 684 streaming channels free with various android app installation, TV guide to those free channels, trusted access to Google photos for screen saver, doesn’t require third party store apps, and doesn’t include ads.
The answer is you can’t because it doesn’t exist… There are 3 major players: Amazon, Google, and Roku. Both Amazon and Google show minor ads, Roku experience sucks balls unless you subscribe every service through them and even then it still sucks while showing you their ads, and knock-off android products require third-party app store trust (fuck that).
You people act like the one ad is so intrusive when you don’t have to even watch it, or hear it. Its completely possible to barely ever see it, and 100% possible to never hear it… and OMG, the ad everyone is talking about has already been replaced with a Real Bugs life movie promo for Disney
You people want to shit all over a device because it has the nerve to stream one single ad for maybe 3-4 hours (maybe longer)… talk about burning down the fucking house for no reason.
“You people and your standards!!!” lol what are you even trying to argue.
maybe read the posts…
Sorry that we accept nothing less than adequate.
I have an adroid TV stick that doesent show ads when I turn it on. Showing ads when you turn the device on full screen is intrusive as hell
Android TV is being phased out. You can’t buy any Google approved Android TV devices anymore… and this is why you don’t buy non-Google or non-trusted partners of Google: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2023/05/potentially-millions-of-android-tvs-and-phones-come-with-malware-preinstalled/
Did you read any of that article? It doesent say anything about phasing out Android TV it talks about malware coming in android TVs sold by sketchy no name companies on amazon. You can still buy android TV dongles. The nvidia shield is android TV and I currently use it to watch adfree Youtube. You should do some research before posting or even forming an opinion so you can stop spreading misinformation
You can get an N100 NUC for about 100$ and it’s a full windows 11 or Linux PC that can do everything you listed and everything else a computer can do. No ads unless you allow them.
sigh nothing you listed about the NUC is even remotely close to the price point or offerings; no PC ever will be… Good luck, with that.
You’re full of shit, a simple look on ebay has a bunch under 100…
And you’re an idiot…
First off, e-bay is where you go for used stuff… we’re talking brand new.
Second, even if you were able to find a brand new NUC on e-bay, you’re not gonna find a NUC or personal PC that will have the same or better performance and offerings without making tons of concessions. If you want to prove me wrong… I’ll wait all fucking day. There’s a reason the PC isn’t considered the same and there is an entire market for set-top-boxes: different experiences and interactions.
Hell, you can’t buy a NUC with a remote, so even if you find a used NUC $50 or less on e-bay, you need to factor in the price of some programmable remote, and actually set it up with some software and most likely additional hardware to support the remote. Second, good luck programming that NUC and remote without a keyboard and mouse… that costs extra money too and makes the experience more cumbersome; never-mind acknowledging the fact that the CCwGTV doesn’t require all that shit… so just stop being a douche because we haven’t even gotten to the actual meaningful differences (the real offerings).
If you want to sling insults, let me know, I’m pretty good at it.
I’ve been using nuc and pc’s for years for all my tv’s. I have a 10 dollar wireless keyboard that works great as a remote.
I think you might need some fresh air, you seem awfully upset over being called out for YOUR BULLSHIT. Have a nice day, prick.
Option 1: Locked down but ready to use shit box that shows you annoying ass ads against your control
Option 2: A full ass computer for slightly more that let’s you do anything you want, watch anything you want, full control over ads or anything else, but takes some extra steps to get going.
Sure man, if you want the ready to use shit box, have at it. I’ll stick with the clearly better option 2, personally.
NUC for 100$ https://www.amazon.com/Bmax-B1-Pro-Fanless-Computer/dp/B0CJBST7XQ), if you wait for a sale you can often get an even better one. Kodi does basically everything you were asking for with a couple of plugins for free. Your phone works as a remote with a free app (kodi remote). You can “program it” by taking any keyboard in the house and setting it up, shouldn’t need it after.
If you somehow don’t have a keyboard or mouse and/or don’t have the tech literacy skills to install a program and a couple plugins and have no desire to learn then I can understand why you feel like Chrome cast is your only option, because it probably is. Nothing wrong with that I suppose, but stop acting like it’s the best option for the average person, let alone the average person on Lemmy.
No discount is worth accepting ads.
Meh, I bought an Apple TV on sale for $100 and don’t deal with ads and have all the shit you’ve laid out here ¯\(ツ)/¯
You also paid twice as much on sale, are part of the Apple BS / walled garden, and are lying through your teeth if you think the Apple TV offers everything the CCwGTV does… good luck with that because honestly, I’ll take a Google dick in the ass before Apple.
Pretty sure you’re already riding Google’s dick because a new Apple TV can be had for $129.
As long as you’re willing to ride their dick over paying the price of true ownership and/or you’re blind hatred of Apple, you’ll always be Google’s little bitch.
And you’re Apple’s dirty whore since you think $129 is comparable to $50
You’re the one joyfully riding Google’s dick.
You thinking Apple is the same as Google only benefits Google. You’ve allowed yourself to be the whore. Lashing out at me is just your way of rationalizing your whorish ways to calm your choice.
Arguing with people who choose Google as fervently have displayed is as futile as arguing with a Trump support, both are using emotion rather than logic and will not accept that anyone is capable of doing otherwise.
Dude… I at least know I’m being fucked in the ass… you don’t because you think you out right own your Apple device because you bought it and have no ads, but joke is on you… Apple TV is a device to a service from Apple which is a nice way of saying you’re being fucked in the ass too.
My position has been to point out that the journalism of the “ads” on CCwGTV is mostly FUD being spread by idiots that want to blow it out of proportion including people like you who seem to think Apple TV is better… its not, and it costs more.
I’ve stated my position several times, I don’t like the ad being shown… but at the end of the day, yes, I’d take the dick in the ass from Google before I’d take it from Apple. We will just have to agree to disagree, but we’re both being raped.
You refuse to accept you could be mistaken in anyway and therefore you can only assume I am mistaken. There is nothing I say, random internet stranger to random internet stranger that could ever cause you to see this any other way.
My Sony bravia has an AndroidTV and has no ads. It’s basically the same thing but without the ad banner.
Yes, and its being phased out with… Google TV. Your Sony Bravia will likely stay as-is, but good luck buying a new smart TV with the old Android TV
Oh man, you got downvoted but you are right, I just checked the local store online page and all the bravia announce their smartness as Google tv, not AndroidTV. Maybe it’s still modified but that needs to be checked before buying anything.
And I said in another comment, the best thing will be to buy a separate sort tv box and connect it to whatever tv we have. Or to search for whatever that works, idk.
Yeah, that was my case, I was happily oblivious to how shitty Google TV was until I bought a new one. Be careful if you need to buy another TV.
Thanks! I’d honestly prefer to buy a tv without smart anything and connect a xiaomi tv, which is also android tv without ads. I’ll see what’s the hot stuff whenever I need a replacement, hopefully not soon.
Plex will do all/most of that with no additional hardware required. Just install the app to your smart TV and phones. Best part is when I go to a anyone else’s house it’s as easy as installed the app to their TV and using the QR code on the display to sing in with my phone. Bonus you install the server app to your home computer and put in movies or media you already own there. You don’t even have to install a server for it to use all of the other aggregation features.
Fuck, you convinced me to look into getting one of these.
Not trying to convince anyone; just trying to keep everyone in-line with the truth, but I honestly hope it works out for you
