I have saying I use that I would love it if other people adopted: The best Star Trek is the Star Trek you like the most.

That’s a remarkably healthy attitude to have. I’m gonna start saying that now.

I hope you do, because I really hope more people feel that way so you don’t have people making sweeping statements like “Discovery is not Star Trek” or “Star Trek started getting bad with Voyager” or whatever. If someone thinks that way, fine. But it’s a personal opinion and plenty of people disagree about what is “bad” Star Trek.

I was born in the late 1970s. I’ve been watching Star Trek since I was a toddler.

I remember when TNG was “bad Star Trek.”

I remember when DS9 was “bad Star Trek.”

I remember when Voyager was “bad Star Trek.”

I remember when Enterprise was “bad Star Trek.”

And now Discovery is “bad Star Trek.” (Amazingly, I haven’t heard that about LD or SNW yet.)

What do all these things have in common? Other people love them and think of them as good Star Trek. Which is fine. The good thing is falling in love with a galaxy where, in general, scarcity is a thing of the past, science and exploration are considered to be vital, and people try to talk things out before they start shooting at each other. Because those things are what makes Star Trek what it is and all of those shows have that in common.

“Discovery is not Star Trek” or “Star Trek started getting bad with Voyager”

Yeah, fuck that noise. Gatekeepers suck all the air out of the room and contribute nothing.

I remember all those complaints. Funny how the tune never changes? It’s like a dirge for douchebaggery.
