I wouldn’t hate the pixel treatment the FF games got. I am playing through FF1 and have the other 5 on tap. I played the intro to FF6 and the changes are a real QOL improvement.
Completely agree with this. I played through all FF Pixel Remasters and it was great. Would love a Chrono Trigger Pixel Remaster so I don’t have to bust out an emulator when I want to play it again.
None of the re releases or remasters can give me the dose of true nostalgia known as vanish-doom. Every game ever should have a definitive version that won’t need emulation though.
There’s already a Chrono trigger remake with the original graphics on steam. It has FMV scenes and the controls are kind of shit so it’s not exactly like the pixel remasters but you don’t need an emulator
But for fuck sake replace the reptite village they added in the DS version with something enjoyable. One of the most tedious sequences I’ve ever suffered through.
I would love to have the same story but more fleshed out appropriate to the character. Add way more exploration of the eras. Maybe a couple more playable characters that are already established in the game like Schala or Azala or one of the gurus in their younger form.
They did what they could with 90s technology, and it was amazing at the time. If they could have done it in Studio Ghibli style, they would have.
We have more opportunities now with better technology, but we keep aiming at the wrong things. We don’t need a 3d, first person world. We don’t need more arpgs, and we don’t need pixel art.
Show 30 years of improvement in the parts that made it strong originally.
I’m absolutely a fan. I just don’t think it is the pinnacle of what can be done now.
Why remake perfection?

It would be super cool if they release an anime series like Ys 1&2 have.
Add that as a DLC and increase resolution of sprites and increase bitrate of music and call it a day. I’d buy that.
Too bad the art direction in Pixel Remasters is so inconsistent and garbage.
Because a huge group of current gamers weren’t born yet back then.
Release it as is. (DS version)
It’s already on Steam. It’s on PSN. It’s probably on Xbox and switch, too. It works just fine. There is absolutely no reason to remake this.
It plays best on an emulator for anyone asking.
Then just release one of those… again!
Stop! You’re getting Bethesda all sweaty!
I’d buy it!!!

A different, coherent story, better art (not pixel), more challenging gameplay.
Try to keep some of the same feelings. Keep it menu based. Keep it isometric.
Invest in writers and art. The gameplay doesn’t need to be complicated.
Shots fired. Just admit you’re not a fan of it and move on.
There is a reason it still tops the best JRPG lists of all time, and it ain’t nostalgia.
