I just remember hearing about it around the same time as the mtn dew thing you mentioned. That and I vaguely remember a school doing the same thing asking the internet for a name and 4chan just said “hold my beer”

You mean Tay? That was Microsoft. One of the researchers involved thinks it was actually interacting with Russian chat bots, not 4chan.
