Any reason you post gifs instead of videos?

I like how the gif’s take up the entire screen whereas the videos crop itself with a 3:2

Could you demonstrate what you are talking about with a screenshot? You should be able to make videos with any aspect ratio you like.

I understand where you’re coming from but here are a couple things to consider:

            1. Depending on what device and app a person uses, the videos and gifs will look much different. Sometimes they will not even load unless you click through to the link.
            2. GIFs are generally much larger size and lower visual quality than what you can deliver using a video format. The large size will result in slower loading regardless of device.
            3. There are other ways to submit video than using redgifs. You can use a different host such as catbox.moe, or you can upload them directly to Lemmy.
            4. For uploads directly to lemmy you have a few options. I did some test uploads of vertical and horizontal videos using a few formats to my personal/test community. You can look at them here: https://lemmynsfw.com/c/metaconnoisseur and see if they display nicely for you. Again though, another person using another device and app might see something different.

Nobody would stop you from uploading gifs, but you should definitely consider using video.

I want to post the videos with sound . I think that would be best. But the videos you posted won’t load

Yeah I have found that the mp4s and avifs hosted on lemmy do not load on iOS safari. They do load on a PC though (I haven’t tested a Mac or an android).

However, if you go look at the webms “Test vertical webm Lemmy hosted” and “Test horizontal webm Lemmy hosted”, they DO load and play on iOS safari so honestly that would be the format I recommend to you. You can use sound with that format as well.

Hi there! Looks like you linked to a Lemmy community using a URL instead of its name, which doesn’t work well for people on different instances. Try fixing it like this: [email protected]
