Donald Trump announced plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America,” claiming the U.S. does most of the work in the region and criticizing Mexico for drug trafficking and migration.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene pledged to draft legislation to implement the name change.
The Gulf, a critical economic and ecological area, provides 40% of U.S. seafood and hosts extensive petroleum infrastructure.
While similar renaming proposals have occurred in the past, they were largely satirical or symbolic, unlike Trump’s serious push for the change.
No he won’t, because if he does, we just won’t use it, and if anybody uses it, we’ll ask them what they mean.
