I remember this was one of Amnesia: The Dark Descent’s first tricks. After an early puzzle, it gave a pulse pounding sound effect, played one distant noise of a monster, and gave you the sneaking tutorial. But players would spend minutes looking around for a monster that wasn’t there.

Or when it tells you where you can hide

DID IT WORK AM I SPRINTING YET?

And then the “sprinting” looks like it does in your sleep, where you feel like you’re running through treacle.

Or when nothing is happening but you find a suspiciously human sized cabinet you can hide in.
