Here’s everything we know about it so far:
- It will use ActivityPub.
- It will be a side app of Instagram.
- It will most likely be called Threads.
- Your Instagram verification status will transfer over.
- There will be easy discovery tools in place: Your Instagram followers will be able to follow you on Threads as well (they won’t transfer over automatically).
What do you think?
There’s no way I’ll actually use the platform, but I personally have no qualms with federating with it on my instances so I can communicate with friends who may be using it that haven’t made the jump to the current fediverse.
Whether we like it or not, this is most likely the best chance for regular people to be introduced to the Fediverse and hopefully gain a good understanding of it, providing that Meta doesn’t hide it from people too much or make it complicated enough that people are “encouraged” to use their platform instead.
Yep, I think the best chance the fediverse has is for corporations to get on it and find ways to monetize it. I personally won’t be joining any servers that aren’t well behaved with my data and feed, but they are free to create such servers.
The only world where the fediverse is successful is one where corporations are on it too.
Normally, I would be against this, however, does the average instance owner have the money to maintain a server? No.
