What great local multiplayer games are on sale right now? Online is fine, but nothing is better than cracking open some cold ones and getting in front of the big screen together. Here are some of my favorites.
Towerfall Ascension - $3 USD with DLC - Local multiplayer archery game made by the creator of Celeste. Celeste uses the same sort of movement as Towerfall so there’s dashes, dash cancels, and snappy jumps just like you’d expect. This is my most played game of all time. The DLC is basically mandatory, as it gives you access to the Steam Workshop for user made levels.
Divinity: Original Sin 2 - $18 USD - Has to be the GOAT split screen RPG. Local split screen, and the screen merges when you’re near each other. Each of you can take one companion and it’s like a small MMO. Okay your own game or play together. My partner and I have put in dozens of hours and we have maybe 100 hours still left if imagine.
Moving Out - $6.24 USD - All the moving day frustration of “bring your end towards me, no the other way” without actually having to provide a pizza as payment. My group of friends got about three hours out of this before we stopped really loving it, but that works out to $0.50/hour/person at this price, and we might even crack it open again another day.
Every single Overcooked game is on sale, and they inspired half the local multiplayer games that are coming out these days.
Rain World is also on sale, and co-op is a blast. As much as playing Rain World can be, I mean.
Cuphead, also, but everyone knows about that one.
It Takes Two - one of the rare two-player splitscreen co-op games on the market. And an amazing game as well - play it with your best friend or SO, get laughs, maybe even feels, and a super fun experience! Can also be played online, and only one player needs to buy it.
For online gaming, the We Were Here series is a finely crafted quartet of 2 player co-op puzzle games. The first installment is actually free to play on PC, so you can give a try if you enjoy the concept. Later games have much higher quality though, and so far every subsequent game has more or less doubled in length, and each one can be played twice as you can change the roles for each puzzle!
Untitled goose game, It takes Two and Portal 2 were very fun in local coop. Did not know divinity had local coop thanks!
I am bookmarking this post to come back to later. I’ve gotten my partner into video games and we like playing local multiplayer, specifically co-op.
Our favourites are: Overcooked and Stardew Valley (Nintendo Switch version has split screen).
Ones we enjoy are: ibb & obb, Jumpjet Rex, Shutshimi, Spiritfarer.
