He hyped up a huge groundbreaking project for like a year… and it was a cellphone game that a 16 year old could make in 3 months.

Oops thats just the teaser for the real game!

Which came out years later and was basically what a 21 year old could make in unity in about 6 to 9 months, and was never finished.

I think he has a budget problem mostly. He has executed some games acceptably, but mostly when the teams were smaller and cheaper. He is an ideas guy you want to pair with an experienced implementer and a pile of money… And maybe a PR team 😆

I would have agreed with you seven years ago.

But how the whole Curiosity Cube BS, how he handled the reward to the winner and its followup game just came off slimy.

There was a ‘game’ about a cube that you tapped to get to the center wondering what was inside. If I recall each install only had a few taps. Only the person to finally open it would get the prize.

The prize was supposed to be the opportunity to make a game with him and all of the profits of something, then it became just a game he would make and like $1000000, then he basically ghosted the winner without paying him. He made a shitty beta half-game thing after like 8 years, then finally just said it was done without actually making anything really playable or even charging for it.

There’s viddocs on YouTube about it.

He basically forgot about the winner, has to be reminded and years later the guy received something that was way off from what was promised.

You can find a much better and more accurate description by searching, but maybe that’s good enough.

Fallen god? Is the person who wrote this stupid? He’s always been a liar and conman.

He did beloved and groundbreaking work, to be taken seriously for even higher promises. Populous, Syndicate, Theme Park, Dungeon Keeper, Black & White, Fable - all genuinely impressive titles only marred by his tendency to overhype.

There’s a reason skeptics care enough to say “oh, him?” when he says he’s got another big idea.

edit: Though they are right to dismiss any promise he makes.

Sounds like the comparison with religion is apt als religion is also lies by conmen.

I miss the times when he actually put out good games, despite all the hyperbolic over promising. Dungeon Keeper was fun, the first Fable was fun, Black & White 1 was fun.

It looks like a VR tech demo that they decided to change into a non-vr game.

If it were me I would add a giant creature into it that has a personality depending on how I and the villagers treat it. Maybe change the name to something that rhymes with “Back and Kite” and slap a number on it, the number 3 feels right for some reason.

You might be onto something here. Crazy you came up with something so genius out of thin air.

I loved the original fable as I was a kid so I didn’t pay any attention to media as I had no means due to my internet access being limited. So I experienced the game for what it was, not missing what it was promised as, which i think I’m really thankful as I’ll always think of that game fondly

Same with me and Black & White 1. I loved the hell out of that game and didn’t know about his reputation. There’s still a massive shortage of god games out there over 20 years later.

Molyneux’s Cube game was peak gameplay.

I’m glad he’s into NFTs and crypto and willing to push us into the future of gaming.

Wow this guy seems full of himself. Too many Kojima types that think they know it all and slap their names on shit as if nobody else could have done it or helped.

I really wish we could have seen that world properly populated. It’s a beautiful action stealth engine.

I can get a publisher being wary of time overruns, but IDK how you actually look at what the game was and the stature of the franchise and don’t let him keep going to do it properly.
