I have literally been told that, about myself, by conservatives. This was while I was in The Navy, and holding a Top Secret security clearance. They didn’t approve of their daughter dating a “hippie.” (That was their descriptor not mine.)

Yes, but what about [single political issue here that Trump is as bad or worse on]?

Clearly this means we should vote for [candidate least likely to win but most likely to split the vote of the non-fascist party]!

        I vote now.

        I don’t think I was selfish before … Just ignorant and/or sheltered.

I don’t think I disagree with your point, but the messaging is unlikely to convert many non voters.

        • I’m just yelling at the choir on Lemmy, I believe. With my actual friends, especially married ones with daughters who say this stuff, I approach it differently. “You always tell me you disdain deadbeat dads, but not voting is another form of failing your daughter. You should be a champion for her rights man, not sitting on the sidelines trying to play nice with ‘both sides.’”

It seems obvious, but half the country thinks Harris controls weather machines and hits Florida with hurricanes for some reason. They show up and vote, because they believe this nonsense deeply.

Please acknowledge the threat and act accordingly. If you are in a swing state, please vote for the rest of us. Your vote matters so very much.

Then there are tens of millions of people who cannot complain about what happens next. Death of democracy in the USA ? “Well I didn’t vote for them” Wife/mother/sister/cousin/friend died due to pregnancy related complications? “well I didn’t vote for them” Etc.etc.

There is never a party you 100% agree with. If there is then you are probably guilty of blindly following. Your job as a voter is to express your opinion whether by writing to your representative, protesting or simply voting. Then hold them to account when they don’t follow through or do something you don’t like.

Don’t let them tell you what you want. Tell them what you want.

Isn’t revising your positions when you get more information or change your morals a good thing? I hate the villainization of changing your views. It’s such a childish understanding of the world where that’s a bad thing. It’s probably part of why our society is so divided now. We’ve used “flip-flopping” as an insult, so anyone who ever admits they did something wrong or changed their opinion must be a bad person. In reality the opposite is true. Admitting fault and growing as a person is a virtue that should be rewarded.

If Harris started saying “from the river to the sea” at her rallies, she’d drop 10 points overnight. If she was still for a ban on fraking, she’d lose Pennsylvania by 10 points. Cheney is really a waste of energy but a non- factor.

Being against genocide in Gaza is a populist statement and position. So are things like sensible regulations and remembering what happened in Flint, Michigan. This whole, “you must either be for genocide or an antisemite” claim you got going on isn’t a good look.

She is Vice-President and does not make foreign policy at the moment and has been quite specific about protecting both Palestinian and Israeli lives as her position on the issue.

Her current role is advisory, the President decides actual policy and her’s as President would be exponentially better than Trump’s.

She has repeatedly said that she would not put conditions on arms to Israel and that her position is the exact same as Biden’s.

I don’t care that her position is merely advisory, she’s in a position of power and she’s using that position to run defense for a genocidal regime.

With power comes responsibility and I’m holding her responsible for what she does with her power

Just as soon as you stop trying to make it look like both sides are the same.

I want innocent people to not be killed. I am sorry that this offends you.
I am also sorry that you are offended that I won’t be voting in this election.
I am also sorry that you hate my ‘dumb fucking mouth’, which I will continue to use to state my moral expectation that innocent people are not killed, whether you like it or not.

I suspect that, if you are to get the outcome you want, you will be perfectly fine with children dying in far off countries. “After all,” you will say, “I got what I wanted.” And you will continue to lecture people like me that we should “do your best to love the people around you,” even when you have shown you lack interest in people on a wider scale.

P.S. me saying “lesser of two evils” indicates that I think they’re not the same, but they’re not different enough to impress me. Learn to read.

Personally, I think the world needs major powers with a bit more crazy to 'em. You really wanna live in a world where you go to bed and wake up to the same thing? Selling nuclear secrets is the spice of life.
