You should be able to copy the pixiv image link to Lemmy and have it show up, alternatively I’ve seen a lot of people use catbox for file hosting as they don’t mind.

I figured hotlinking to Pixiv might be a bad idea, but I’ll jump over to catbox if I want to post hi-res images for sure.

I’ve uploaded a few big things there before, but I figured that it might not be a good idea to post giant resolution files in the first place.

fair point; pixiv may not be the best place to link as image host. catbox on the other hand seems perfect for something like lemmy.

The best thing for hires images would be progressive image decoding which gives you a quick low quality preview of the image while the full version is loading in; but it doesn’t seem like google is open to the idea of using JpegXL which has a much better user experience with it especially since it would be much closer to a default compared to the normal Jpeg standard which requires you to use a fancy encoder such as mozjpeg and has a couple of minor issues when decoding. WebP does sort of support progressive decoding; but it’s not the same kind offered by Jpeg and JpegXL where you’d get a full preview as soon as possible; that said right now it’s one of the better lossy compression formats if you look at file size and how widely it’s supported; but JpegXL would be a much better standard in many regards.

long story short: the tyrant we gave control of the internet is now abusing said control and making the internet worse for everybody.
