All the posts are about combat between some guy with a short sword vs. a spear. No one has considered Paul’s ability to predict future actions and using that to determine the best outcome. Much like fighting a Jedi (who presumably could anticipate the immediate future), how can you fight someone who already knows how you’ll move and the best counter?

Geronimo shredded motherfuckers with a spear. Dude was a master, one of his stories was about killing a whole regiment of Mexican Army who were armed with guns and he and only one or two other tribes men walked away and Geronimo was covered in blood and guts with only his spear left as a weapon.

You only get a short time with the pointy end of the spear and then once a sword wielder is inside your range, you’ve got an unwieldy stick and they have a sword. Good for stand off melee maybe but prob not. Go swords.⚔️

Yes, but getting in close without getting stabbed is really hard.
Here’s an actual example of modern HEMA folks giving it a lot of goes:

So you’re saying, once you lose your advantage you gain a disadvantage? This the kind of religious propaganda that put Atreides on the throne

Absolutely not. It’s the other way around there’s a reason any army get spears while swords are just a simbol for nobility.

I’m not an expert, are you? All the in dephts historical weapon stuff I met in my life has told me and confirmed me spears win against swords.

I didn’t say spears didn’t win against swords.

Spears are easier to wield, it’s a pointy stick. It requires less training to use. Requires significantly less materials to make.

They are a standoff weapon though, in close combat a sword or small bladed weapon wins. Different tools for different purposes.

The information I’m parroting is from experts and historians and literature and everything I’ve read over my 4 decades, it’s common knowledge at this point and not really worth “arguing” imo.

At close range the spear becomes a staff which can block the knife and give a concussion thwack.

I fenced in college against people with slightly longer arms and just that minor difference put me at a huge disadvantage.

I feel you. I know how many hits I can get in just stabbing at unexpected moments at long range with my sword, with a spear it would be plenty easier.
