As a human being living in the real world, that’s a terrible idea. Please never take it out of the house.

Went on a tour of an airport (small international one). Security told us they get weird scares all the time. A guy had a paperweight novelty grenade in his bag. Crazy part was they knew him-he worked there for 30 years and had recently retired. Dude missed his flight and had to answer looooots of questions. FBI didn’t clear him for travel until a month later. They said it wasn’t a prank either, guy just didn’t think anything of it.

Why spend $12 on an easily replaceable battery when you can just use $11.97 worth of 18650’s and six hours of your life?

If you already opened it to install this, why didn’t you just buy an actual replacement from China?

    ETA:

This is (probably) a Blackview Tab 12 Pro

I found a proper replacement ranging in price from $10 to $30 depending on if you wanted a Stateside store and faster ship or willing to wait for AliExpress.

This is a solution in search of a problem

It is very unique for sure, I don’t think I’ve ever seen this done on a tablet before!

I worry about being able to take the tablet outside the house without getting the bomb squad called on you, but I suppose you could maybe 3D print a cover for it, maybe even integrate a kickstand for that extra functionality lol

what I often miss on a laptop or a tablet ?

    A handle.

It’s also a great place to put batteries.

The Thinkpads understood that, but then forgot

Pretty awesome hack to extend life on devices that are otherwise meant to become e-waste. Kudos!

the only difference between this and the internal one is that its more sucepptible to piercing damage, but the contraption itself isnt any more inherently dangerous conpared to the battery in the tablet itself.

if youre worried about house fires at all one shouldnt even use lithium ion batteries period.

Well except for the exposed contacts from the holder. These types of holders are designed to be on the inside of things and not exposed. Bridging one side to the other would be a fire and explosion risk. OP needs to put a cover over it to be safe, or at least some kapton tape over the exposed contacts.

You are correct - I forgot to link to the tutorial page on my website where I’m pretty sure I explained that I’m fully aware of the risk and nobody should do this

18650’s? Those are a dime a dozen. Unless you want the actual company that made those specific ones. If that’s the case, I can’t help you.

Well brand does matter, as their specs have been widely incorrect to sell cheap batteries to make them seem premium.

I mean you can always just get LG’s. Pretty hard to go wrong with them as long as they’re official

Yes, Samsung, LG, Sony if you can get them. I’m very “anal” about 18650/21700 battery safety. I have seen perfectly brand new cheap ones just vent for no good reason and it aint pretty.

Really? It never happened to me even after shorting one once… There are some super cheap ones at the local Chinese store I was thinking of trying out, the brand ones are pretty reasonable already though, so that’s what I use. Maybe will give the cheapies a miss at least for indoor projects
