Battery on my Android Tablet died, so I upgraded it with 18650 replaceable batteries. Tutorial with pics
I did this last year with an e-reader
Geez did I not link to the tutorial here? That’s what happens when you’re in a hurry. https://www.circusscientist.com/upgrade-your-tablet-with-replaceable-batteries/
Also, no I don’t take it out of the house - and the batteries are from an old power bank so essentially free.
How to have the whole train car to yourself.
def looks like a handwritten 00:00:01 countdown clock on it lmfao
It would be much simpler to use an external battery pack, like this.
Mfs out here really trying to get shot by law enforcement lmao
Lol, probably not going to wait for cops, just gonna rush them before the bomb gets set off.
As a human being living in the real world, that’s a terrible idea. Please never take it out of the house.
Went on a tour of an airport (small international one). Security told us they get weird scares all the time. A guy had a paperweight novelty grenade in his bag. Crazy part was they knew him-he worked there for 30 years and had recently retired. Dude missed his flight and had to answer looooots of questions. FBI didn’t clear him for travel until a month later. They said it wasn’t a prank either, guy just didn’t think anything of it.
Getting banned from all air travel speedrun.
Yeah, I thought it was like a defuse the bomb type thing.
That’s… a lot of batteries for one tablet. Where are the other 18,647?
That thing in the back isn’t a tablet, its 18,647 batteries in a metal trench coat.
Omg
Lol assuming this is an honest question, or answering for those that are truly wondering, 18650 is a type of battery, not the count. Like AA, AAA, etc.
I do appreciate how hard it can be to tell the difference sometimes.
Why spend $12 on an easily replaceable battery when you can just use $11.97 worth of 18650’s and six hours of your life?
Free batteries from an old power bank…
Cool, but I’m not seeing a link to the tutorial.
If you already opened it to install this, why didn’t you just buy an actual replacement from China?
ETA:
This is (probably) a Blackview Tab 12 Pro
I found a proper replacement ranging in price from $10 to $30 depending on if you wanted a Stateside store and faster ship or willing to wait for AliExpress.
This is a solution in search of a problem
Context I live in a country with an unreliable postal service and shit currency. Also batteries were free from an old power bank
but replacing the battery doesn’t mean you get to have a tablet with replaceable batteries
It proves you already had a tablet with replaceable batteries…
Replaceable vs “easily replaceable”
I guess we could use the term “swappable” here as a distinction.
I’ll accept that compromise. Now I’m more curious if the batteries are hot swappable though. It’d probably cause some chaos with the battery indicator but just making me think…
If you get more likes on your comment I am willing to test this
Wouldn’t the battery indicator already be fucked because of this? Do those cells match what it came with?
Actually capacity exceeds the original spec. Battery indicator seems accurate though.
The logic here is astounding.
replaceable batteries as in AA batteries
Ig, but you can expect a Li-ion to last about 2-3 years, it’s not that much of a chore to open it up every 3 years, especially after the first time
Maybe op really likes to carry spare batteries instead of, you know, a power pack?
why should you open it up again, instead of just charging/replacing the repalceabke batteries
Because they’re ugly, bulky and inconvenient as fuck.
okay but who doesn’t want a tablet with replaceable batteries
This is the best hack I have ever done!
It is very unique for sure, I don’t think I’ve ever seen this done on a tablet before!
I worry about being able to take the tablet outside the house without getting the bomb squad called on you, but I suppose you could maybe 3D print a cover for it, maybe even integrate a kickstand for that extra functionality lol
what I often miss on a laptop or a tablet ?
A handle.
It’s also a great place to put batteries.
The Thinkpads understood that, but then forgot
Pretty awesome hack to extend life on devices that are otherwise meant to become e-waste. Kudos!
Thank you that was the idea, In the missing tutorial I explain that I used batteries from a power bank with a broken usb. So yeah re-using stuff, this tablet should last 10 more years at least! https://www.circusscientist.com/upgrade-your-tablet-with-replaceable-batteries/
this looks more like “how to set your house on fire”
Only to people who say such things
It would work fine. Could use a cover.
the only difference between this and the internal one is that its more sucepptible to piercing damage, but the contraption itself isnt any more inherently dangerous conpared to the battery in the tablet itself.
if youre worried about house fires at all one shouldnt even use lithium ion batteries period.
Well except for the exposed contacts from the holder. These types of holders are designed to be on the inside of things and not exposed. Bridging one side to the other would be a fire and explosion risk. OP needs to put a cover over it to be safe, or at least some kapton tape over the exposed contacts.
You are correct - I forgot to link to the tutorial page on my website where I’m pretty sure I explained that I’m fully aware of the risk and nobody should do this
As long as it’s all wired correctly it should be fine.
who makes thoese cells?
18650’s? Those are a dime a dozen. Unless you want the actual company that made those specific ones. If that’s the case, I can’t help you.
Well brand does matter, as their specs have been widely incorrect to sell cheap batteries to make them seem premium.
I mean you can always just get LG’s. Pretty hard to go wrong with them as long as they’re official
Yes, Samsung, LG, Sony if you can get them. I’m very “anal” about 18650/21700 battery safety. I have seen perfectly brand new cheap ones just vent for no good reason and it aint pretty.
Really? It never happened to me even after shorting one once… There are some super cheap ones at the local Chinese store I was thinking of trying out, the brand ones are pretty reasonable already though, so that’s what I use. Maybe will give the cheapies a miss at least for indoor projects
there’s a guy who reviews batteries. his name is mooch.[]=
Sounds kinky.
