As the car gets warm, the snow at the bottom melts. Then the idiot parks it to do his groceries or whatever so it cools back down and freezes into a 2 inch thick block of ice. Then they drive on the highway. That block of ice breaks free, flies up in the air, catches in the wind while tumbling which gives it an unpredictable trajectory and smashes the windshield of a car that was unfortunate enough to be further back at that time.

I know because it happened to me. Had to get a windshield replaced in the middle of a road trip. The dipshit who caused it didn’t even realize what happened and kept driving. The police should absolutely crack down on this instead of all the other petty bullshit they tend to harass people over.

They do, in some communities, fwiw. I’ve gotten a warning contingent that I remove the snow RIGHT NOW.

Don’t want to doxx myself, so I’ll just say “in the northeast US.”

It can get you a nasty ticket just about anywhere, but the cops have to enforce traffic law for that to happen

Idk I had several people warning me about that when I lived in Quebec, and I very rarely saw people driving with snow on their roof, so I assumed it was enforced quite seriously

I live in a place where it is illegal and can get you a ticket but the cops never pull anyone over for it so a lot of people don’t bother. Every winter /r/Connecticut is about 25% pictures of people with piles of snow like this on top of their suvs

I was just looking for a video to say exactly what you did, people should see it happen in real time:

      https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=ZA8HB6ZpVRY

(This is invidious, a yt proxy, if you don’t recognize the URL. Content (no audio): A car’s dashcam captures an incident where a seemingly small bit of ice comes loose from a car ahead of the driver and destroys the windshield. It’s hard to notice if you aren’t looking out for it, bit of a jumpscare.)

Just the snow blowing off into the windshield of the person behind them is dangerous enough to cause a fatal accident.

Had similar things happen too. It’s why I hate driving. Some moron doesn’t even realize how amazingly selfish and idiotic they are being, and come this close to killing someone, meanwhile they just keep driving like nothing happened

Yeah it’s pretty possible to injure or kill someone if that flies off while driving on a highway

Pretty hard to keep your rear plate uncovered when driving in snow conditions. The air currents pack it in there like that as you drive. And it can only take a few mintues of driving to make it happen.

But the roof? Yeah get that cleaned off!

One time I left a (much smaller) snow helmet on my car. After a very mild stop at a stoplight, I instantly had a blocked windshield too heavy for the wipers to fix in-situ.

I was able to turn into a small parking lot without risk of hitting anyone/anything and clear it off.

    Overall: 2/10, would not recommend.

It can be annoying and difficult, but it’s worth going the extra mile even if it seems like a small amount of snow.

Even if it wasn’t super dangerous, I wouldn’t be able to drive like this. It’s like a giant sign that doesn’t just say that you’re lazy, but selfish.

I have done this exact thing before, and I’m very sorry fellow drivers because I was born on a tropical island and I had never seen snow before. I truly thought nothing of it and just drove the car so long as I could see out the front.

Could you see out of the back?

So many Florida plates here in Chicago that dive around with the whole back and side windows covered in snow. We’ll, not this year because of climate change, but last year was terrible.

Pro tip: if you can’t see out of the car, don’t drive it.

o/ im a Floridian in HS who went through the whole process a few years ago. Snow was hardly ever mentioned on the learners permit test and wasnt even a concept when taking the actual driver’s license ‘drive around test’ which is probably why nobody from here knows what to do. Genuinely my 11 year old brother could pass it in a week if I thought him. Floridians are also bad drivers anyways so that also compounds lol
It’s weird driving on your own for literally 2 years and being a safer driver than people in their 40s who have infinitly more voting power than you.

“Fire it at the Tesla in front of me…” The animosity toward Tesla owners (or Prius or any other EV/Hybrid owner) is stupid. Why hate them?

Because the CEO of Tesla is a massive bastard? That’s not their fault. They may not have even known what a fuckhead he was when they bought it, nor should his behavior influence their car ownership. Plenty of good people work for Tesla too.

Or because they don’t support the gas/oil industry? That’s moronic. As much of a shit goblin Musk is, he holds no candle to the collective evil of the fossil fuel lobby.

Don’t hate someone for their taste in consumer goods. They’re just trying to get through life, same as you.

Now, if you wanna launch that snow drift at a “coal rolling” diesel pickup truck who is intentionally destroying the environment, that’s a different thing altogether.

Yes, because the CEO of Tesla is a massive bastard, in addition to the fact that Teslas have spear-headed spyware for cars. There is no doubt in my mind the cameras on those cars will end up like Ring Doorbells, giving law enforcement unfettered access to footage without a warrant, not to mention the fact they can (and will!) be selling your location data, and anything else they can scrape from you to the highest bidder. Are you a tesla driver who wants to have an abortion? Too fucking bad you’re now on a MAGAt harassment list because they bought that information directly from Tesla. Good lord why are we defending CORPOS on a federated platform. FUCK. CORPOS.

I’m not defending “corpos,” far from it (I even pointed out that Musk & other CEOs are shit). I’m just defending every day people who drive cars and just want to get to & from wherever without being harassed/attacked.

A lot of people didn’t pay attention to Musk’s heel turn, although I think that’s about to change.

If I were a Tesla owner I’d get one of those stickers that say I got this before Musk went insane or whatever.

Teslas are some of the most clueless drivers on the road, especially model Ys and model 3s. They’ve surpassed BMW/Mercedes as the not paying attention stereotype.

Lol, gotta observe that the minivan driver thinks they’re in some way superior to the targeted Tesla. They’ll keep telling themselves that as they’re picking the cheerios out of the seat cracks with dried rotten milk stains left by their kids. Got to keep your masculinity intact somehow by imagining your coolness.

Does the minivan brick itself if it goes through a car wash without pressing the right button?

Cheerios can be vacuumed a lot faster than buying a vehicle not built for ego and nonstop recalls

Minivans are awesome and actually have a large amount of usable space, starkly contrasted to today’s pickup trucks with sparkly clean beds and SUVs that are all useless interior plastic. I’ve hauled sheets of plywood, MDF, and lots of bottle depot runs with mine.
