Is Lemmy Connect the first and currently only way for individual users to block instances? I know you can block instances if you host an instance yourself, but not everyone wants to do so.

We should be promoting this feature if indeed we are the only one with it as it has been in popular demand, especially lately, with Threads now being a thing.

Yes we’re the only one as far as I know! We’re also the only one with:

    • filter keywords
    • user tagging
    • auto-read on scroll past

And hopefully in the future Multi-communities.

Edit: we might be the only ones with swipe actions and swipe navigation? It was surprisingly difficult to add both at the same time.

I believe it’s where you group communities together for greater organization. You could have separate feeds for different areas of interest.

        This has been edited.

Oh sweet! I didn’t even notice you added user tagging. If I could make yet another request: adding the ability to tag from the post and comment options rather than just on the user page options. I mostly used the feature with comments on Sync but sometimes I’ll tag right from a feed and a post itself.

The swipe navigation I’m slowly getting used to and liking it.

This means if you blocked my instance you wouldn’t see my comment? But others on your instance could still see my comment? Wouldn’t that lead to confusing comment threads?

I’m not against the idea in general. I like the idea of curating the experience that best fits your desired experience. I’m just still trying to wrap my head around this federated communication.

Ideal implementation (IMO) would be a thin note in the comment string indicating a comment from a blocked instance user, to fill in context for you that there is a reply there that others can see, but is not being shown to you by default.

You can then read it (if you wish) by expanding it.

I think this could cause a lot of confusion.

Most users on a instance just picked it for some random reason. They don’t all suddenly agree with everybody else on the instance.

So if you start blocking entire instances, you now can’t have any contact with anyone there. It’s like refusing to talk to all Germans if you are an Italian.

It’s not hard to see how this can lead to a very confusing fediverse.

In Settings, tap on the Block Settings button and you’ll be ablyto manage the blocked instances in there. Hopefully in the future, the option to do so is added in the post options menu, so you can block right from your feed.
