Also an opportunity to impersonate someone like a mod or something by making an account on a different instance using the same username of a known user and claiming to be their alt. I cannot think of lasting damage that could be done, but just pointing out that there can be also downsides that we should be wary of.
Pay attention to the domain lol
Same shit with spam emails
That’s the problem. If there was a well-known user named “[email protected]” and that instance went down, that would be a perfect opportunity for some other random person to create an account named “[email protected]” and claim to be their alt account that they are using while their main account is unusable. As we can see from this thread, genuine users definitely do use alts on different instances to deal with downtimes like this, so that is a plausible cover for an impersonator.
Fair, some sort of verifiable identity marker, people hate crypto but an nft in your wallet could be used for identification.
Abe Froman… I mean, ummthatguy?
Hmm a very interesting point. And I don’t think we want to implement a “blue check” symbol for verified accounts.
I would pay eight replicator rations for Lemmy Premium just to get a lame checkmark by my name.
