I feel like its what ruined the reddit nsfw community, but a lot of people probably like the current version, and ppl horny posting for fun like gone wild was supposed to be is probably dead. Everythings an ad, at least if its only in the profile the illusion is still there that they do this because they enjoy it and not for capitalism and survival lol.
I’m not a fan, but from a technical standpoint I think embedding a non-mainstream external site like redgifs is worse. Lemmy supports direct uploads of some file types (possibly webm?) and there are systems like PeerTube for larger video hosting.
What about the load on the LemmyNSFW servers ?
I worry about that too. I think if a webm file is the same size as or smaller than a high-res JPEG it shouldn’t make a difference.
I did some tests several years ago, and I found that VP9 was roughly as efficient as h.264 and Opus was the top performing audio codec. (WebM specifies those two, maybe more since AV1 came out.) At 640x360 with I-frames every 4 seconds and moderate quality, you can get maybe 5-10 mins. of video and audio down to a couple MB. If the server imposes a strict limit on file sizes regardless of type, people will find ways to keep the size down, and the impetus is on the server because of people’s constant drive to consume resources.
I genuinely think LemmyNSFW people can capitalize on this oppurtunity & create a platform where one can freely explore pornographic artistry.
As in a PeerTube instance for NSFW content. But I also rather not have the LemmyNSFW folks take on extra burdens
We’ve seen that Lemmy allows direct video uploads, but as someone that works in tech I’m aware that would be an economical burden to the admins and whoever is paying for the server (and its storage). So we prefer to upload things to Redgifs to help and post using links. We record short videos anyways and if they’re too long for Redgifs, well, we split them in as many parts as we can, and that means more posts. Win-win. We totally do it for fun tho

Sorry by links I meant to onlyfans or other fan/content sites within the post/comments itself, versus being in the profile, but this is also an interesting discussion lol
