@db0 / @sunbrothersco does this fall under the low quality post rule? I’m asking this because I don’t want to see !piracy becoming just as bad as r/piracy was, if it is going to increasingly be memes I’d rather find another piracy discussion place in the fediverse

I would hope this falls under low quality. The meme isn’t even decently made, poorly cropped. Come on people

just saying that people not paying for things increases the overall cost of those things. the collective of normies pays your fair share.

embrace it my dude, it is what it is.

              I would disagree.

If a person purchases entertainment then the overall revenue and profit for that product would be increased. This increase in profitability from last product reduces the pressure to increase prices for future products.

What occurs with piracy is that a person that may have otherwise purchased the product, not do so; lowering the profit of the company and driving increases in price to remain profitable. While this is not the case for people that would otherwise not buy the product at all, there are still a number of pirates that would pay for something if a pirated version did not exist, and so there is an effect.

I’m not attacking you personally, I’m simply stating that piracy is not victimless. I think we should all taking ownership for the harm we cause others even if it is something small.

Piracy is victimless, as it doesn’t remove something from the creator. Taking something away would make them a victim. Me not buying a game and not engaging at all with it is the same as not buying a game but still playing it.

You assume every piece of pirated media would otherwise be bought, this is not true at all.

It seems like you didn’t read all of what I wrote and instead only saw the last section. I did not assume that and reaffirm that piracy does in fact have victims.

While this is not the case for people that would otherwise not buy the product at all, there are still a number of pirates that would pay for something if a pirated version did not exist, and so there is an effect.

About once every two years or so, I download all of Metallicas shit. I delete it a few days later. It’s not even about sending a message.

I’ve tried paying for 3 services, but thanks to their different “unique” payment and subscription systems, it became easier to just streamio.

They came so close to stamping out piracy … so very very close.

All they had to do was make streaming more convenient than piracy and people would stream instead.

And they did that for several years with netflix , piracy rates plummeted as people could just pay a monthly fee and stream all the latest movies quickly and conveniently to the device of their choice.

BUT The movie companies got greedy and decided they wanted a slice of that delicious streaming pie filled with tasty tasty revenue , so they pulled their content from netflix and made their own streaming services , and pretty soon if people wanted to stream all of their favorite shows and movies they would need half a dozen or more subscriptions , which was simply unaffordable to most people . So they had to make a choice , they would have to choose which streaming services they wanted to keep and then either do without the content from other services OR go back to torrenting what they wanted and once had included in an all in one subscription… and people are not that good at doing without if it is convenient to not do without.
