I made this map of stuff to do in Luxembourg within easy daytrip reach by car - thought that might be of interest to people here. Within Luxembourg, the Bradt guide is very comprehensive, so that is why I left Lux itself blank. The challenge is for the Grande Region – it is difficult to find good information because a guidebook on “France” will have like 2 pages for all of Lorraine, a guidebook on “Germany” will have like one sentence for all of Saarland, and WikiVoyage entries are similarly sparse. Reise Know How has a “Saar-Lor-Lux” guidebook that covers a decent amount of the Grande Region in detail (minus Belgium), but (a) it is only in German and (b) it is probably the least helpful guidebook I have ever purchased.
Anyway, everyone has their own things they like doing, but I’ve talked to a LOT of people who are from Luxembourg or who have lived here for 10+ years, and they have -maybe- heard of one or two things on this list and have never been to any of them.
I didn’t include everything here, e.g. Malbrouck Castle is also kind of neat. Some sites are interesting more for historical reasons (e.g. Verdun, Montmedy Citadel - very run down, but it was the final spark that firmly launched the French Revolution; Louis XVI almost made it there when he fled Paris), some are of variable interest (e.g. Villa Borg and Rodemack are much more interesting during special events/festivals). Most of these sites are only - max - 2-3 hours of visiting time, and there is a reason none of these things are on a highlights list of “What to do in Germany” (except the Middle Rhine which is really a highlight of all of Germany, and the Middle Moselle almost as much) or “What to do in Belgium” or “What to do in France”.
None of these are AMAZING daytrips that anyone would fly from Australia to Europe to do, but they’re pretty neat to have in your backyard. I’ve been in Lux for 3.5 years and I’m pretty much out of things to see on my “to do list” for daytrips, but it also took me 3.5 years to get the ideas list totally checked off. I hear people say “there’s not much to do here” and… that’s really not true unless you don’t have a car. If you don’t have a car then, well, literally none of this stuff is realistic as a daytrip except Metz, Namur, and Trier.
It’s possible I forgot something when making this map, but more likely if something isn’t included here, I either don’t consider it a “cultural visit” (e.g. Amneville’s attractions zone), or I visited it and thought it was notably boring (sorry, Arlon, Saarbrücken, Liège, etc), OR because it’s more than 2 hours from Lux Ville (e.g.Maastricht, Heidelberg, Cologne) and not really good as a daytrip.
