That’s what evasion is for.
Plus evocation wizards can Sculpt Spell, if they’re feeling nice
That’s why I made Katherine’s Unfailing Missiles. Level 9 “fuck you specifically spell” up to 3 targets in a 30° cone 200’ long get hit with 1-3 missiles that do 17 d6+1 points of damage split 50/50 between Force and Sonic. You can’t dodge. You also can’t be immune to both damage types at once.
Each cast creates 3 missiles.
Even with Improved Evasion, you can still roll a 1, as my rogue that explicitly told me not to worry about hitting him with a fireball found out.
I don’t get it. The rogue wanted the wizard to cast a spell. As a seasoned wizard player, I can say with certainty that fireball is our only spell. Rogue knew exactly what he asked for.
Smart rogue would have asked for clerics help
My rogue explicitly told me, “I’ve seen your fireballs, don’t worry about hitting me, I can dodge them.”
Cue the very next combat against trolls:
Katherine (my wizard) failed initiative, so even with Improved Initiative she only rolled a 5 and was last, no worries though cause the monk stayed back waiting for her to blast said trolls.
Fheldar (the rogue) charges one of the three trolls, getting all of their attentions, and whacking one with his firey rapier.
The cleric hit 2 of them with a flame strike, severely damaging the two Fheldar didn’t hit.
It finally gets to me and I let off with a damn near perfect fireball hitting all three trolls, plus Fheldar for a whopping 63 points of damage, dropping Fheldar and the trolls.
He rolled a 1 on his dodge check. We got him resurrected, couldn’t afford a true res at that point. He flipped me off when I asked him about dodging.
Will never forget the day my sorcerer walked 30 feet away from the group when a pack of wolves attacked us in the middle of the night. “I’m gonna cast Hypnotic Pattern, some of you will probably fail the save but most of the wolves definitely will”
I didn’t mean to lie. I really was going to use Hypnotic Pattern. But all 8 wolves and all 3 allies were in such a nice little area, that could easily fit within a 20 foot radius sphere…
As soon as they see my character glowing red, there was no panic, no anger, just a quiet, disappointed “dammit, Nora…” before they all nearly died
