Just a quick heads up, that r/menopause (on Reddit) has been re-opened for the time being. In the coming days, it will be ‘restricted’ instead of being private.

As an internet user of more than 25 years, and a redditor of more than 12 years, I think it is important to continue fostering this community on Lemmy. It is currently the only publicly-owned and operated social media platform and has exploded in growth in just the last few weeks. For those of you missing the wiki here, we are just waiting for a software update that will allow for larger posts (the wiki is huge!)

Personally, I believe strongly in having a healthcare-focused community that is free from advertising and corporate and pharmaceutical interests. I sincerely hope I am not alone in this belief.

I know some of you may want to return to reddit now that r/menopause is re-opened, but I implore you to consider the road ahead.

More updates to come.

Made it! Finally got past the spinning wheel of purgatory. Thanks for doing this. I’m not against people making money but I think it’s important to remember the big picture and not allow ourselves to be treated like pawns by people who don’t care for us and will take whatever they want from the community if it suits them.

Thank you, leftylibra, for the excellent info you’ve posted in r/menopause–which I’ve gotten so much from–and for taking the effort to restart things here. So glad for the community and that it will continue on in this more equitable platform!

    Hey @leftylibra!

First of all, I just really want to say thank you for all the work you’re doing, both here and trying to deal with the reddit situation!

I just wanted to let you know, in case it comes up, right now, the beehaw instance (which I’m a member of) has defederated (is that the correct word?) with lemmy.world and at least one other instance. I can see the old posts here, but none that have occurred after the defederation.

I went ahead and joined .world to make sure I can stay in contact with this group, so no real problem on my end. I just wanted to let you know, just in case someone brings it up as an issue?

    Again, thank you for everything!

Thanks for sharing! We are aware of the beehaw situation. I know the mods are hopeful for a resolution once additional moderation tools are available on this platform. We are grateful that @[email protected] has kept user registration very open for the time being, to make the sign-up process easier for the thousands of redditors coming over.

I just found this instance through this link and I’m super happy about it! I didn’t even search for a sub, which is weird since I’d been on Reddit for over 12 years as well lol

I’m in full support of all alternatives and have been browsing the Fediverse since the blackout and I must say I really love it. I don’t plan on going back to Reddit, the only thing I kinda miss is my local sub.

In any event, thank you very much for this instance. Subbed and will be reading :)

I’m personally done with reddit but I’m sure others appreciate it. I have been wanting to find a new platform for awhile and it took the blackout to make thst happen. I will be here on lemmy moving forward.

    Thank you!

I tend not to make rash decisions, but having seen the degradation of Reddit (rapidly recently) I was already considering alternatives. Glad one of my fav subs migrated over!

I’ve not nuked my Reddit account, but I’m out of it after porting all my bookmarks.

Thank you for reopening the subreddit. It will make it easier to download posts I made containing valuable details about my menopause experience.

Also, a huge thank you in general, leftylibra, for the time an effort into creating and moderating this important .

I have said my final goodbye to reddit. What a shame. I had the “secret” figured out in finding the actual content over the shitposts/shitreplies. I learned so much there on a multitude of topics. I hate how often I’m checking facebook now. I tried to get into Tik Tok but I allow myself to watch one video about “my neighbor from hell” or “watch this Karen lose her mind” and that’s all I get recommended for days, and then I start to feel like the world is a terrible place.

I’ll be sticking it out here.

My thoughts are that after July 1st, reddit will continue to degenerate, and become more like TikTok, etc. spamming us with ads and AI-generated content steering the narrative. In fact I think that’s what happening now as reddit is forcibly removing mods and replacing them.

This platform is only going to grow and the numbers of new subscribers to lemmy over the last week has been incredible! Redditors are moving here en masse, so it’s great to see.

If you haven’t yet, have an explore around lemmy, you can see a list of subs/instances that have moved over and are growing!
