I understand the joke but literally today I was in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. And I have very similar impression: where is all the stuff I remember?? As I understand there is some reconstruction, and only half of the space is available, and the exhibition is less interesting because of that. Still cool, but I got the same vibe as in OP.
The Udvar-Hazy annex is where it’s at, literally and figuratively.
I visited the Smithsonian air and space museum while over from the UK a few years ago.
I had a short space of time available, and all I wanted to see was the SR-71 blackbird and the space shuttle.
That was the day I found out there were two air and space museums.
Still haven’t seen either of them.
