Gun scare people. Scared people with guns fire more bullets. More gunfire scares more people, causing them to buy guns for protection. Now those additional scared people with guns use them, bringing that same fear they feel to more of their neighbours, who respond by buying guns to protect themselves…

If you really want an armed populace just make it mandatory for all citizens to complete 1 year of military service, with the people retaining their service arms at home. This way everyone is trained the same way and follows the same standards with their weapons. This takes the ‘cool’ factor out of owning guns, takes the identity politics out of it, and the criminals will now know that they likely cannot gain the advantage in fire power just by getting a high capacity magazine.

It would also calm the cops down, because the year of manditory service will weed out all the crazies that cant handle the responsibility of gun ownership, and since everyone went to the same program you have an automatic national database of who isnt fit for ownership. Give mental health proffessionals the ability to flag on the database when an idividual is having issues so their weapons can be TEMPORARILY removed untill their mental health is restored.

The 2a guys will also lose their main talking point: government is the one giving them the gun now, they would look stupid REEEing about ‘gubberment wants muh guns!!’

It seems like the USA will never say no to guns, so why not go full ham instead of just letting every state make up its own rules as it goes along? The current system has some very obvious flaws. Freedom should not be free, it should require responsibiliy, the proof is in the never ending american gun tragedy.

Edit: accidentally tripple posted, still learning the UI… deleted the two duplicates, and fixed some bad grammar

They didn’t even finish “saying drop the gun.” And judging by the complete lack of return fire I’m going to guess that even if the homeowner was dumb enough to raise their gun at the cops, shots 2-64 were unnecessary and did nothing but place everyone in the next couple apartments in danger.

This whole story was ridiculous—the cops were completely in the wrong. They were responding to a call in one apartment and were told a different apartment had a window broken. They went to check it out, and this was their reaction. The woman they shot at was a friend of the apartment tenant.

The friend was shot 5 times and is lucky to be alive. These cops should never be allowed to touch a gun again.

Sorry, but if this happened where I live, the officers would be on trial on multiple accounts.

There is an investigation in progress, and the evidence is going to be handed over to a grand jury. This is a recent incident that is still unfolding.

That’s a whole lot of faith for a system that routinely declines to prosecute cops who kill people in the exact same circumstances.

I didn’t say I had faith in the system, I simply said what is happening. The end result is not yet known, and you are correct that there isn’t a great track record of police accountability in America.

That’s the problem though. It’s always, “wait for the investigation” and then a year later it’s “we investigated ourselves and found nothing wrong.”

Yes, I agree, it is a problem. I’m not arguing against you in the slightest. I have done nothing other than say the facts of what is occurring here.

There is a problem with police accountability in America, these cops were irresponsible, and an investigation is ongoing. I’m not sure what else you expect me to say that isn’t speculation or opinion.

Jesus Christ. Yet again a law abiding citizen is responsible for recognizing the police and responding in the exact right way in a split second. While the police are allowed to act like terrified wild animals.

I take that sentence back after seeing the run up footage linked in this article. This was nothing more than an ambush. They knock on the door and then move off to the side. They then open fire the second they see her. There was zero chance for the victim to even realize it was the police.

It’s legal to carry a gun in the US, but cops can execute you if you have one. Really surprised there haven’t been more reports of homeowners mag dumping at cops and then the excuse at trial could just be “thought it was a break in”.

The problem with that is they call reinforcements and kill you with overwhelming force. It’s really a no win situation once a cop panics and decides you’re armed.

This in no way excuses the ludicrous use of force by the police, but… They forgot the keys, so they broke their own window to get in? who does that? It’s an apartment, call the super? or a locksmith? Get called to a break-in, see signs of forced entry, see someone coming to the door with a gun… Yeah that’d be intense all right. Doesn’t excuse the police actions but dang. bit more understandable

Sometimes it’s cheaper to replace a window than it is to pay an extortive “lock out fee” from a complex.

Easier for me to break the door open and fix it later. Why yes, I have kicked my door open twice. Also kicked in a friends door.

It’s quite reasonable for most of Americans. Apartment managers won’t answer at night. The locksmith isn’t going to answer at night very often, and when you find the one that does answer it will be an hour or longer for them to arrive. Kick in the window, replace it with a half hour trip to the hardware store the next day. You’ve saved a half hour in total, and probably a large amount of money.

I broke the window in my friend’s place (hilarious story, not relevant here, totally) and it was about $20 at the hardware store for the glass, glass cutter, and caulking. Between the two of us it took about 15 minutes to cut the appropriate size of glass and get the caulk looking semi-professional. We aren’t talking a complete replacement of the window frame, paneling, cutouts, etc. We also aren’t talking anything custom or fancy. If you can point to a double-paned glass window or some extremely fancy one that exists in an apartment complex (in Houston, of all places, too, so you know multi-housing developments are cheap as fuck), you are going to have a butler ready to open the door for you and won’t need a key in the first place.

Oh, I didn’t realize you weren’t talking about a whole-ass window, that makes more sense for the price if you’re just replacing it with whatever glass you can find

If the thing they were shooting at was ever alive it wouldn’t have been the first full mag of bullets unloaded on their body, but after several mags by several cops being dumped on the body, then by the time it’s taken to the morgue it’ll have more holes than swiss cheese.

Apparently she not only survived, but she was also only hit 5 times out of at least 40 shots. These cops need to be fired because they panic and they suck at shooting if they ever were in real danger.

There are several Swiss cheeses that are notable, but referring to one specific kind as “Swiss” (that may or may not be Swiss Swiss), I believe is a US thing to do?

The acorn slayer was a man. And he panicked even worse. He got hit on his imagination, then rolled like an idiot before shooting to his car.
