I’m guessing your company’s server (or whatever other form of central hub you are using) has Edge as the default browser. Alternatively, it could be some admin default setting your IT forgot to switch off for your accounts.
Would be good if it was only 10 minutes. Where I’m from it’s 15 minute ads (with horrible sound usually too), followed by 15 minutes of trailers.
Though we don’t have this bullshit with “convenience fees”.
You can limit yourself to Local, which will only show you communities from your own instance.
Also, when you see a clear case of someone acting in a shitty manner you can report them. This report doesn’t just go to the community’s mods. It also goes to all the admins of all instances involved (your and their accounts’, and the community’s instance) as well as to the top admins. But be warned that it’s not anonymous (your username appears in the report).
You can also open a discussion with the admins and users of your instance. Your admins can block other instances, but that will apply to all users of your instance.
I’d suggest just to be patient though. Usually fascist instances tend to get banned and defederated.
Or you can find an instance that is already defederated from the problematic one.
I think there will be an adjustment period, where the Reddit habits will continue to be exhibited. Most redditors have been heavily propagandized for years. Those that stick around and don’t end up in defederated instances will eventually grow more and more deprogrammed.
There’s currently a big push on reddit to keep the protesting communities away from a lemmy migration (downvotes, censored comments, highly upvtoed suggestions towards irrelevant alternatives that are owned by corporations and not part of the Fediverse). I suspect that the massive Western psyops mechanism is afraid to lose one of their most effective echo-chambers.
The only concern I have is that lemmy.ml is already leaning towards tone policing, which makes it somewhat susceptible to be taken over by the shitlibs and fascists.
Boris and Biden (who has presided over the Maidan coup) are just cogs in the capitalist/imperialist/colonialist machine. They are simply doing the job assigned to them. If not them, it would have been someone else who created this insanity, possibly somewhere else. We should still direct our ire towards them and their ilk, but we shouldn’t forget the material conditions that led to this.
There’s hundreds of Western think-tanks and organizations pushing for similar plans to be enacted all over the world. The goal is simple: have Western capital dominate and dictate humanity. As long as this political “party” exists in the West (created after WW2 in its current form), the world will keep suffering.
In fact, I predict this whole thing will start all over again. Maybe not right after Ukraine (as the world has mostly turned against the US/UK/EU dictates following Ukraine; even the EU is rocking against it). Maybe in 5-10 years, and most likely in Taiwan. It will be the same story just with different actors.
If you remember, Boris Johnson had flown into Ukraine during that period. According to some Ukrainian officials, he convinced/cajoled Zelensky to keep on fighting. Johnson appears to have told Zelensky, that if he accepted the peace deal, then the West would not “protect” Zelensky and his family (presumably from the Nazis).
The deal would have been pretty good for Ukraine too. They would commit into not joining NATO and stop killing civilians in the East, and recognizing Crimea as part of Russia. Russia would give up the territory it took and would provide financial support to rebuild the embattled areas.
Maybe not at the personal user-end, but most corporations and other organizations are completely reliant on MS365 and/or Windows. Especially, in the education and finance sectors, Microsoft has taken over. COVID lockdowns made things worse as everybody switched to using Teams for corporate communication.
Edit: it might seem really silly that corporations went that heavy into Teams or Office, when there’s free alternatives like Discord and LibreOffice respectively, that have the exact same functionalities and are arguably more reliable. The reason is MS products offer a lot of tools to surveil employees
