I always assumed it was filled with extremists, but now that I think about it, that impression came from reading Lemmy comments about it. I now realize that it might have just been people suggesting, for example, that defunding the police might not be the smartest move, and similar fringe views.
I looked at it a few times (for that reason), and there were definitely a lot of disturbing posts on it. I can’t say that there were a bunch of people though (a lot of posts I saw were by the same user)
