      Or go tenure-track in educational institutions rather than research institutions. I left my PhD program with an “all but dissertation” MS and immediately got a few adjunct jobs teaching at a small private university and a community college. A few years later, I wound up full-time with tenure at the CC, and I couldn’t be happier with the decision to leave research.

      100%. It’s absolutely brutal right now. So glad I left academia for industry, they pay you more and you work less. Too bad I did two post docs first. Like, why the hell would I fight and claw for R01s when I could just like, NOT DO THAT.

      total scam.

        Actually, the problem is similar. The currency in academia isn’t revenue or profit, but publications, the incentive structure is pretty much the same, though.
