no cost
I think the head of a CEO somewhere just exploded.
Space: The final free tier.
It’s 1:30AM and you have me cackling like a witch here.
Halloween was last week, man!
Star Trek is forever
Unlike the free tier.
And witches are forever
Absolutely despicable, +1 points to you.
and every conservative congresscritter, for some reason. ‘couldn’t this be done in the private sector’
CEOs are usually not relying as much on taxes. That’s why it’s free, this is a way to justify tax usage by developing public outreach.
Walmart CEO definitely relies on taxes, food stamps, WIC, and other programs. ISP CEOs took tax money for Internet upgrades and did nothing. Multiple bailouts for business that they squandered on stock buyback.

With this being a free service, I feel like calling it NASA+ is a bit misleading. To me, I feel like the “+” indicates a paid, premium service. If it wasn’t for the title of this post that clarifies that it’s free, I probably wouldn’t have even considered installing the app based on the name, alone.
Either way, this is great news! I’m probably gonna check this out once it’s available. I wish they’d have a release date, though. The official page just says “Coming soon”.
Feels very much like they’re just following the trend of a bunch of streaming services that just add a + to the end. As long as it’s good though I don’t think it matters much
I think Paramount ++good sounds promising
I much prefer Paramount#
i dont know. the garbage collection is buggy and keeps removing objects before they finish running
Strikes me as tongue-in-cheek.
The release date is November 8th.
It may mean, NASA content plus other content they feel is appropriate to the service.
I don’t usually think “paid service” when I see the plus symbol added to something.
Huh. There’s no geolock on this either? Fantastic. As a Canadian I tend to get blocked from this kind of stuff. This will be super cool. Might even replace my LCARS screensaver after years of use
Ever since Canada created the elegantly named “Canadarm”, NASA and Canada have been besties.
To say nothing of possibly the greatest Astronaut to fly to the Space Station: Chris Hadfield
flying toasters screensaver for life!
THE DAY I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR
The US federal science agencies are generally pretty happy with sharing things. If it’s free to the US public, it’s free to the world and I love that. Best possible use of my tax dollars.
(We also share weather and hurricane data with the Caribbean countries, for example. None of them could individually afford what the US is doing, so I’m happy we share.)
I’m still using a particularly excellently implemented Matrix screensaver from XP, hehe.
And what’s that (less authentic looking but still great) one for Linux terminals? cmatrix I think?
Yeah it’s cmatrix. You can get it pretty legit if you tweak the settings enough.
I remember that XP screensaver like it was yesterday though.
I posted on Lemmy about needing recommendations for movies to watch on shrooms…and then minutes later stumble across this article.
Talk about perfect timing, lol.
This is really starting to feel like a perfect replacement for that…other website.
Monty python and the holy grail and/or life of brian.
So long as Holy Grail is first
I have a huge list of trippy & visual movies, tons of variety if you’re interested in picking through it for ideas: https://letterboxd.com/bee_tea/list/background-movies-for-house-parties
heavy on the sexual stuff (for house parties) but awesome list, you picked off 99% of what I’d probably go for but would add 2001, The Shining, liquid television, paprika and tron heh.
thanks for sharing inspiration!
You are actually the master of finding lists for any given scenario. I thought it was just for playlists, now I’m almost scared to know the true extent of your power 😅
aww thanks! I am definitely a list person hahahah
MST3K is my goto 🍄
In my Humboldt opinion, it doesn’t matter what I watch as long as I consume enough shrooms. I watched Hot Tub Time Machine the last time. It was great.
I took too much and had a really bad trip watching “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2”
Hey, at least it wasn’t angry birds!
Were you completely lost because you hadn’t seen the first one?
Since other people are giving trippy recommendations I would like to suggest Fantastic Fungi and The Colors Of Infinity. FF is a fantastic mushroom documentary excellently made. Colors Of Infinity is a public domain documentary about the mandelbrot set fractal. Its presented by Arthur C. Clarke and original music by David Gilmore of Pink Floyd fame. I curated a list of links to watch it and other fractal documentaries for free here.
The new show “Scavengers Reign” reminds me of tripping a bit and is actually very good.
Pink Floyd’s The Wall
You trying to give them lasting psychological trauma?
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
NASA+ will be available on most major platforms via the NASA App on iOS and Android mobile and tablet devices; streaming media players such as, Roku, Apple TV, and Fire TV; and on the web across desktop and mobile devices.
What’s the betting it won’t be on LG’s WebOS though? 😭
My deepest sympathies to all 3 of you.
Lol you joke but that includes every LG OLED tv sold to date
Don’t most with one have a better box?
Usually yes, Plex is slow as shit but honestly iPlayer is still fantastic even on a b7 2017 oled.
That’s good; it stopped working on my aunt and uncle’s Sony (although I guess it’s a bit old now, it still works well) so had to get them a Fire stick instead.
Who will think of all the palm pre’s out there
Good news - the Apple TV app is free and runs on LG’s WebOS
Will that have the NASA app? I’m sorry if this is a stupid question.
From the sound of it, AppleTV will carry the NASA+ TV channel. The app is presumably something that sits on your smartphone and is another way to access content
Thank you!
Don’t say that… I’m planning on getting an LG
Get a streaming stick. The hardware TV manufacturers use to run their OS is generally bottom of the barrel and is sluggish as hell.
Their OLED panels are top notch, so don’t sleep on it. Just get a separate streaming device as the experience on Roku, Android TV and Apple TV is just miles better.
As others have said, don’t buy TVs for their smart features. Just use a streaming stick. They are easier to replace as software changes, and there’s practically no real benefit to ever putting a TV online in the first place.
Also, LG panels are the best visual quality. You’re doing good going the LG route. Just keep it offline.
LG OLEDs are amazing, worth the price. Their OS is also very good compared to other TVs, I used it for years without an outside player. Now I have an Apple TV, which is better, but I still miss the LG’s magic controller.
Bro just get an external player and don’t worry about the garbage OS built into the screen.
Oh, it’s a total guarantee they won’t, ugh.
Can’t you just play it from the web?
I bit the bullet and got a Google tv with Chromecast because webos always gets left behind (and there was no homebrew YouTube alternative like smarttube on it)
If you haven’t updated the TVs software you can probably root it (rootmy.tv). The Homebrew store has ad-free YouTube.
My tv didn’t allow the exploits that currently exist, i remember trying and failing. That’s why I ended up with just using something externally. Shame, i enjoyed the magic remote
We know it’s ad-free and zero cost, but will it be DRM-free as well?
I’m not sure if US government IP is legally allowed to be DRM’d.
Not only is it not allowed to be DRM’d, “US government IP” is itself an oxymoron: stuff published by the government is Public Domain, so it doesn’t even count as “intellectual property [sic]” to begin with.
Yeah, it’s paid for by taxpayers, so it’s all fair use.
Edit: I realize from the replies that my point was off base and actually opposite of the debate here. I’m going to leave this in its place, but thanks to the responders that showed me this wasn’t the right place to make the point I was trying to.
Govt research grants are not videos literally being published by the govt. They aren’t particularly comparable siuations. It’s why I can’t just buy a stock of Disney and suddenly have free access to their IP. Meanwhile I can rehost whole programs put out by NASA with zero issue.
I get the anger and it’s justified, but man is it misdirected here.
Thank you. I agree and I’ve updated my comment. 🙂
Yes, thank you. You gave a more detailed answer than I did.
No, I was specifically talking about their media content. Pictures, videos, etc.
Most NASA stuff is published under non affiliation free use license - you can do what ever you like with it.
I wouldn’t be surprised if a majority of the content is already freely downloadable from somewhere…
A budget that goes into space exploration, development of groundbreaking science that has its use both in space and on Earth, popularization of science among masses, democratizing access to cutting-edge knowledge, making it free for everyone, including kids and the poor, to access at any time? Yes, please.
I think monetarily supporting people would help them more.
We can afford to do both. We choose not to.
Probably true to some extent. Though, at what point do you decide it’s better to just directly give the money to people?
There’s no situation where it isn’t better to just give the money directly to the people who need it.
Considering it is such a small percentage of the budget and they have developed so much useful technology (https://www.howtogeek.com/831363/these-nasa-innovations-are-all-around-us-everyday/)
I would say, take the money from other things that suck, like handouts to the rich and wasteful military overspending which would easily cover the things we need to cover. Defunding NASA would contribute to the dummification of the country and is a terrible idea.
Considering it is such a small percentage
Currently, but during many of the innovations it was a much higher percentage. And why do you assume there wouldn’t be other, maybe more impactful innovations, if NASA money and NASA researchers weren’t working on something else?
That would be great, but that’s not NASA’s department. Try Congress first. Then the DOD. Edit: and then the morally bankrupt billionaires.
I’m not advocating NASA donate the money, I’m advocating considering cutting NASA’s budget
Especially if you don’t live in the shitty country. Yes please, sacrifice the physical and mental wellbeing of Americans for an indepth knowledge of the Universe just before you regress into full facism. Your war crimes won’t be overlooked though.
I am not even American, but I do know that the US Army budget makes the NASA budget look like pocket change.
I’d say you’re focusing on the wrong sector…
Seriously, I’m always confused by people complaining about NASA’s budget. It’s peanuts in comparison to the other stuff our Government wastes money on. Also doesn’t help that the government itself is responsible for a lot of the money wasting that happens at NASA. The Artemis program being the perfect example, which is basically just a glorified jobs program at this point, as mandated by the government, instead of actually being a smart way of building a rocket.
US americans are complaining for nasa, public schools if they don’t have kids, public health sector, even for bike lanes because they use no bikes, but almost never for all the military expenses on the other side of the earth.
People who are so uneducated that they think funding public education is a bad investment are great proof of why we need better public education…
NASA isn’t sacrificing American’s wellbeing, regressing into fascism, or committing war crimes. That’s multiple other branches of the government. Despite whatever media you’re consuming the US gov isn’t one unified dictatorship, as much as a certain political group would like it to be.
NASA is one of the few branches of our government that’s actually somewhat decent and doesn’t need a complete overhaul to benefit our country or world. It’s already paying us back the relatively small budget allocated to them in several ways. So your comment is basically a whataboutism.
Oh fuck off.
For a yearly fee of just USD 50.000, I will fuck off at zero cost!
God you’re so dumb it’s incredible.
cheap for what you get
…or about 3% of the military budget. Quite a bargain.
Maybe you’s could do a similar thing for healthcare and get healthcare for free, like this new nasa+ thing. Wouldn’t that be wild
But what about the profits of insurance companies that act as gatekeepers to your healthcare?? Are those people just supposed to get different jobs? Bet you didn’t think about who you would be hurting
Sarcasm
The funny thing with tax is you don’t get choose how it’s spent. Tax money is public money that ought to be spent in the public interest, and NASA is a perfectly good example of this. Other good examples are infrastructure, parks, public healthcare and free education. Bad examples of tax expenditure are the ridiculous military complex, massive corporate subsidies and contractors doing poor work that the government should be directly controlling.
If it’s called NASA Plus, how is it free? The “plus” means it goes a step beyond their free content and into a paid tier.
Don’t get me wrong this is absolutely fantastic I adore NASA and space, but they’re just be some hidden cost? Otherwise it wouldn’t be a streaming service called NASA Plus, right?
The “plus” means it goes a step beyond their free content and into a paid tier.
Notepad++ enters the chat
It’s actually Notepad+, plus it’s free
No, it is Notepad++ and it is called like that because it is written in C++.
Are you sure C++ isn’t just C+, plus it’s free?
They say it’s free but that’s how they get ya. It’ll only cost your soul!
Maybe the real cost was the friends we lost along the way.
Woosh :p
Looks like they refer to adding their Science wing into the streaming, too.
In this crazy capitalist world peiple started forgetting that public services can be free, like, for real :D
*Paid for with taxes, not free.
That goes without saying.
It’s free for the end consumer and everyone knows that it is paid with taxes. So saying free is just easier.
But the Libertarians always have to say it. Nevermind that anything free from a corporation is paid for though advertising, or selling your data, or folded into the item cost, or future purchases, so by this strict definition that “someone is paying for it” means literally nothing is ever free.
It has to be said EVERY TIME someone mentions that public services are offered at no charge.
If I need to pay taxes anyway, at least I prefer to have the investment returned back to me in some way, and this seems like a nice way to do so.
Well it’s free for me!
Everyone knows that… that’s what they mean by free, free to use. Why do you think people don’t know this? Did you just figure it out or something? Are you seriously that slow?
I don’t think everyone sat down and agreed to that being what plus means. It’s like labeling food as organic, it means nothing. It’s just a name. Odd thing to obsess over, you’ll get nowhere trying to understand marketing people, just let it go.
What they are adding is a more condensed experience accessing NASA content and making it easier for casual viewers to access. The more people paying attention to science the better. I think this is a fantastic move from NASA
Why do you think the organic label for food means nothing?
https://www.usda.gov/media/blog/2012/03/22/organic-101-what-usda-organic-label-means
Compared to the standards for organic in civilized countries, that’s basically nothing.
You realize I can slap the word organic on anything, and it isn’t using the certified organic label… right? Want some “organic ATX motherboards?” I gotchu.
If you’re not afraid of the legal system why not slap a Disney logo on there too?
Do you know how many companies use just organic, and not “usda certified organic”
Most
I like how confident you are about your answer.
However, perusing the USDA website one comes across this set of “strongly” worded guidelines:
“Can a product be labeled “organic” without being certified? If you make a product and want to claim that it or its ingredients are organic, your final product probably needs to be certified.”
“If you are not certified, you must not make any organic claim on the principal display panel or use the USDA organic seal anywhere on the package. (see exemption below)”
“You may only, on the information panel, identify the certified organic ingredients as organic and the percentage of organic ingredients.”
Apparently, if a company does mislabel its products, it is liable to be prosecuted by the Federal trade commission.
If you make a product and want to claim that it or its ingredients are organic, your final product probably needs to be certified.
That word probably exists in the same article you originally linked.
But many actually don’t do it which is why they don’t use the USDA certified
plus just means more I think, they’re adding to their service so it’s “plus”
just because that’s usually a hook to get you to pay more doesn’t mean that’s now the definition of the word
sure. However “plus” means that something is additional to something else. And the question here is what is the basic product that makes this one be the additional
You’re really trying to make this more complicated than it is. Should they just call it NASA? NASA Streaming? NASA VOD?
It’s just a catchy name.
ok, so the word “plus” is used to indicate that it is a streaming service. Got it
They’re selling our usage data to aliens to pay for server costs
What do you expect? “We’re not hosting an intergalactic kegger down here!”

What other “plus” apps have a non plus version though? Stone Disney+ it’s just become “the thing” that streaming services go by now
Disney had a several tv channels and an app that was free for subscribers when they launched Disney+ but I don’t know if they still have the old app.
The “free” apps require a cable subscription, so they aren’t really free.
Sure, maybe “included for subscribers” is probably a better description.
Mauve for this you’ll need to have an account? This would already help nasa market products towards you and this is a good value they can get without you paying anything.
Mauve you’re right, mauve you’re not, mauve I’ll see for myself.

Nice
Gotta love some american propaganda.
Space is space, it’s on your keyboard
Did you confuse NSA (American gestapo) with NASA (a bunch of nerds that really like space and use American funds to indulge that passion)?
I’d totally pay for NSA+ to live-stream American phone calls and Internet traffic.
No. Can u remind me again why nasa was invented? Was it something to do with a propaganda war with the USSR and a space race perhaps?
Oh man nobody tell this guy who created the first internet.
Anything a government (or company) puts out can be seen as propaganda. Nobody is going to talk shit on themselves if they can avoid it.
And yes govt tech usually has a military origin and is part of a race against other militaries. Rocket motors, missile guidance systems, satellite imagery, gps, computers, encryption, the internet. It’s already well underway for AI. Just because they have their start in military application or global competition doesn’t mean they aren’t rad as hell or not worth learning about.
If you don’t want to watch it, nobody is forcing you to.
Sure, but this one allows some scientific progress rather than civilians massacres.
Dont know brought up civilian massacres bu i love nasa
Are you not familiar with NASA TV? It’s pretty interesting at times with science updates on their exploration programs like the Mars rovers and JWST. They also broadcast EVA’s and have interviews with people working in Mission Control and elsewhere. I like it a lot.
I am familliar i love it damn cool shit and impressive engineering. Its important that while enjoying it that u dont forget its a tool to promote american propoganda and scientific exeptionalism
Space is the only place where Russia and America are friends. Nasa only cares about politics as far as they need to to keep their funding. And even then they generally opt for less politics even when it means less funding.
The only “politics” NASA plays is to advertise to the public how great the things they’re doing are because the more public support, the more funding they get.
And nobody should be against that. Everything NASA does is toward scientific progress. The amazing things they’ve done on their miniscule budget should be lauded and they should be given a much higher proportion of the US budget than they are currently afforded.
