I heard something new that realy makes you wander. If the earth is rotating as they say than how airplanes can go in straight line? If earth is moving under them they should land way off the desired destinacion… 😮 They are not connected to the earth so rotacion shouldnt apply to them, it applyes only to cars and runing animals but not on airplains and bierds… Also when you jump from baloon that is wery high up, you shouldnt fall straight down, if the earth is rotating it should move under you and you could newer fall on the same spot that you jumped over… 🫢

I cant beleave this newer came to my mind for entire life… 😵

You know the whole ‘body in motion tends to stay in motion’ thing? That applies here. Something doesn’t lose its rotation from the earth just because it stopped touching the ground.

The atmosphere is rotating with the Earth, so airplanes and hot air balloons rotate with it too.

It actually does make a difference for rockets though. Most rockets launch east, since they’re able to use the spin of the earth to help them fling out into space. If you launch West, you need to overcome that rotation, and it eats into your energy.

But for things that aren’t leaving earth, it all rotates together, so there isn’t any relative motion from it.

It just goes to show that the Earth isn’t flat - it’s the inside surface of a cone. Buy my book.

    Two concepts: gravity and momentum.

Gravity pulls mass towards the centre of the earth whether they are physically touching the ground or not. This is the reason when you jump you come back down and don’t just float off into the sky. This also is important for things like planetary atmosphere so the air around the planet doesn’t just diffuse into space.

Though you are jumping straight up and down from your perspective, relative to the planet your jump matches the constant rotation speed of the earth. Momentum states that objects in motion prefer to stay in motion unless met with an opposing force. So you land with the same rotation as you started. You can test this by tossing a small object in a moving car as you brake: it will continue forward as you decelerate.

Disclaimer: not a physicist, I just love Bill Nye and other science video presenters.

They don’t “say” the earth is rotating, we know it is, because people have literally watched it happen in front of their eyes while in orbit. But before we ever sent anyone to space, we were already very good at determining the shape of our planet and the dynamics of our solar system just by making observations from the ground. Ever notice that the stars aren’t always in exactly the same spot when you look up? That’s because the earth rotates and orbits around the sun.

Airplanes do not fly in a straight line, it just looks like they do if you look at their flight path from above. Kind of like how the earth might look flat if you only look at a paper map. It’s not.

It’s hard to tell if this post was a joke, troll, or a genuine question by a young student who hasn’t taken any science or geometry classes yet, which would be totally fine. But these are concepts that we’ve had a very clear understanding of for a very long time. Pick up nearly any astronomy book and you’ll have your answers.

But you didnt answer my question. Lets put airplanes aside and take a look at baloon jump. Do you understand whats happening there or not. If you do than explain it, if eart is rotating than you wouldnt be able to jump and land on the same spot.

Imagine how fuckin’ windy it would be if the earth span at ~1600 km/h while the air/atmosphere stood still.

Yes thats exactly right. So you are saying that atmosphere is rotating together with earth or what?

What else would it do? Space doesn’t have friction against the environment. If it did, how would other planets have rings.

love to see a patriot speaking truth to power but where is the question

edit nevermind i see it but i think you already know the answer and its that the earth isnt spinning because its flat

Inertia. It’s the same reason why if you jump inside of a moving train, you don’t fly into the back of the train. With a balloon it is the same, you can go straight up from the ground and have zero perception of any other movement but in reality the balloon is moving with the Earth too due to inertia.

The atmosphere rotates with the earth. So planes can maneuver for the same reason ships can.
