I always have to talk my folks down from shit they heard on Fox and Newsmax. They have called me frantically panicking that:

-There is a new gender neutral bathroom in addition to the M and F rooms at their gym!

“So you haven’t been inconvenienced in any way?”

" They are going to take the women’s room away! I don’t want to change next to a MAN!"

“… Are they taking the women’s room away and forcing you into the gender neutral one?”

      " well no…"

“So you haven’t been inconvenienced in any way. This sounds fine. Why are you calling me again?”

-The government is going to force them to switch to electric cars and they don’t have a convenient outdoor outlet to charge a car!

“Did you get a letter that they are going to seize your car?”

“No not yet but they are going to do it soon!”

“Okay, well that sounds like it probably isn’t imminent, why dont we wait to see of you get a letter and then we can react then; worst case we take it to court. Also, someday you will have to replace your old car and an electric one might be a good option for you guys. Dad is getting too old to get under the car to change oil and you know he’s too stubborn to take it to a shop. You don’t need a lot of range, you only go to church, the grocery store, and your craft club. There are incentives to put in a charger anyway.”

My dad has a heart condition and these fuckers are driving both of them to an early grave for cheap political points. Fuck these fear profiteers.

I would support taking away gas stoves and replacing them with modern induction stoves, because it would reduce childhood asthma 12% and probably help a lot of people improve their air quality inside their house, reduce the incidence of gas leaks, etc.

But Biden factually does not want to do that.

    I do. But Biden doesn’t.

I’d settle for no new gas hookups. Why are we allowing people to waste money on new infrastructure for something we just need to get rid of? You know they’ll just come whining for handouts in ten years when they realize they ve wasted their money. Why allow people to shortsightedly think they’re saving a little up front at the expense of more breathing issues later?

A lot of people getting these installed don’t have the choice. My new build home (2023) has gas and I was very frustrated by this, basically every home in my area uses gas and it’s not something I could opt out of since I didn’t control the home as it was being built. I do plan on replacing my gas appliances basically as soon as I can reasonably afford it, but there are other amenities new homes also don’t come with that I need to deal with first.

Mine is much older so gas was an excellent choice. Some of my neighborhood has oil heat which is much worse. I don’t know if mine was always gas, but I see no sign of oil

Anyhow, now that I’ve lived here 20 years, everything is coming up on replacement age. I decided “if it dies, it gets electrified”, but maybe I’m close enough

I lost electricity for almost a week last winter when it was 0F, the only way I got my house warm was boiling big pots of water, I will never get a electric stove, I simply don’t trust the grid.

Interesting that you apparently don’t have a gas furnace, the much more obvious solution. Boiling water for heat is not like a cool and easy solution with no risks or downsides. Get a generator if you’re worried about electric outages that bad.

True, though I’d like to take this opportunity to point out that a gas furnace takes less power than a space heater to run, so a generator of virtually any size can run it.

Everyone should look at the greenhouse emissions from oil refineries and power plants before they really start taking things away from individuals. We all play a part in reducing global warming. Eating less meat and using less energy and natural resources can help, of course, but let’s address the big polluters of carbon dioxide and methane. The two biggest greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide and methane. California’s biggest polluter is some refinery in Los Angeles. Is eating less meat going to put an end to that? I would hope that Biden would have a more reasonable solution than what this guy is suggesting.

I mean, yeah, eating less meat is the biggest thing an individual can do. It’s something like skipping a shower every day for a week is the same as eating a quarter pounder. And that’s just water, doesn’t even get into GHGs

It’s possible to believe that both individuals and corporations have wrongdoings they are responsible for fixing. If corporations disappeared and your preferred magically ideal socioeconomic system prevailed, it would still be unsustainable if everyone were still omnivores.

Yeah well the other side also wants to take away our household appliances and our meat, and also everything else by enabling corporations to squeeze everyone dry even more than they already are.

Like, fuck Sean Hannity and all that, but I’m pretty sure if half the Lemmy users were in control, I’d be allowed to eat nothing but leaves and have to cut my gas stove into pieces so I could bike it to the recycle depot.

The stove thing is soo stupid. It’s not even a ban on gas stoves, it’s just requiring you to properly ventilate areas when they are installed.

Yeah people act like Joe Biden is going to personally show up at their house, kick them in the nuts, and take a sledgehammer to the stove. I mean, I’d pay to see that, but it’s really just various levels of government saying, “Hey, breathing this stuff in isn’t great for your brains, here are some financial incentives if you want to replace your stove.” The reality is kind of boring.

Hmm, I think there may be some overlap between “people whose brains have been damaged by improperly-ventilated gas stoves” and “people who think the government wants to rip their gas stoves out of their house and leave them to freeze.”

I know those are the same people who would never look at data or facts, but ….

My ex lives in “new-ish” townhouse (just a few decades old, which is new for this area). It’s new enough to be fairly weathertight. However it is gas but the stove has that “ventilation” where it sucks up all the smoke and toxic gases and grease, and blows them in your face. However, now they also have an air quality monitor and it’s eye opening just how quickly the air quality gets bad, and how bad it gets, when they use the stove. Anyhow who cares about facts or reality should really get a look at something like this. In any sane world, it would change minds

Or the alternate zoning thing that also got caught up in this: no new gas connections. That’s also not taking anything away, just changing what gets built. It also doesn’t cost more: the big cost is when you need to convert one set of infrastructure to another: can we just avoid that headache?

If conservatives really believed in “fiscal restraint” why can’t the see new gas connections as a waste of money creating infraStructure that will long outlive its usefulness? No city grows fast enough for this to really help much with our energy transition, this is merely stop wasting money on something we need to get away from
