I watched that clip on Kimmel. I don’t normally watch but I like Bill Burr. Kimmel got really uncomfortable after he said Free Luigi. Not just like the network telling him, but in a way that seemed like Kimmel doesn’t understand why people like Luigi.
Kimmel is really quiet leftist, so he gets it. But he’s also beholden to network executives who only understand money and the things that make them money. And advertisers don’t like Luigi or the idea that CEOs are disposable.
Kimmel gets it…his advertising people won’t be happy about it though.
It’s against the rules of lemmy.world to call for violence against insurance companies, and the people who work for them, so I won’t. But I don’t think it’s against the rules to imply I would if that wasn’t in the rules.
I’m surprised to see this comment and the amount of upvotes.
Doesn’t this break the PC bubble, where every person who works a mediocre job is a good person and no matter how disgusting the company is, you should never take your frustration out on them, yada yada yada.
But if it’s an insurance company it’s okay to commit violence?
Yup, thats it. People are literally saying that its okay to commit violence against anyone who works for any kind of insurance company. Even the cleaners of a home insurance firm.
Well done you for understanding the situation.
I have no idea what you’re talking about. I don’t think anyone has advocated violence here, have they? That’s certainly not in my comment.
Eeeeehhh… depends on negative individual impact on society and personal gain? I think the barely surviving insurance Employee should never be the target, what are you implying here? Have the insurance office shootings already taken over the school shootings? What meta level of could should have we reached to Dodge the ban?
Different people
I believe a revolution that is gained through blood is doomed to become oppressive
Look at China for instance
Other people disagree and feel change cannot happen without violence
France would certainly disagree with that statement.
France had a pretty rough go of things before Napoleon was elected
Then had another rough go of things until Napoleon III died and they abolished the monarchy
It’s not against the rules to imply that the rules should be different.
Unfortunately it’s the jurisdiction that they operate under that enforce some of those rules.
Because of the implication?
This is slightly off-topic, but I really hope someone films this new Broadway version of Glengarry Glen Ross, because Bill Burr and Bob Odenkirk doing Mamet? Holy fuck do I want to see that.
Yeah, I listen to the Smartless podcast and they’ve brought it up a few times lately, including when KK was on there recently. I have very little interest in theater, but the cast alone makes me want to check it out. The cast alone will also be why I can’t afford to go probably.
I really don’t know Kieran Culkin well enough to know how he would be, but those other two make me want to see it almost as badly as I want to see the production of Waiting for Godot put on by Robin Williams and Steve Martin, which I doubt was ever filmed since it would have come out long ago.
Wait, WHAT?! Seems I have some furious Googling to do
Technically, that was why he was on Kimmel in the first place. To promote it. But it’s Bill Burr and he gives zero fucks, so he talked politics instead (although he did also bring up the play).
Fucking just make this guy the face of the dnc and we can be done with all this shit already. Just fucking do it already. Pull the strings, pad his pockets, and get going with reconstruction.
I swear to God if someone passes control of the dnc to bill burr we will skip 50 years of regression.
There’s very few people that could run the DNC worse than the current DNC.
If the DNC is still a thing in 4 years, we have utterly failed as a nation and we can drop the pretense of not being a 3rd world country. (Yes, I know we are in the definition…time to change that definition).
The DNC isn’t going anywhere. GOP needs them to give the illusion of democracy. Only they will cede more and more power as they “lose” more and more elections.
feeling like this more and more everyday, all smoke and mirrors for $$$$
I played ball. I gave the DNC 8 years to sort this shit. They are a sunk cost. You cannot rely on them. Look at last fucking election. You can’t tell me it was strategy to get your ass kicked at every turn. Yes, yes, the media can shape your narrative any way you’d like but just look at the facts.
1.) Your “ally” starts a war in the middle east and is so reckless it’s indistinguishable from genocide. Then, you tie yourself to that wagon alienating your entire base.
2.) Your elderly leader runs for a second term despite everyone around him identifying his failing health and after he said he would be a “transitional president”
3.) Despite his opponent being a raving lunatic the media crafts a narrative where the leader of your party is a geriatric joke that is so salient he is forced to step down. His entire campaign riding on one useless debate that hasn’t won a president elect anything in the last two cycles.
4.) Despite every other developed country voting out incumbents because of world wide inflation you hand pick someone apart of the current administration to run. Even given the opportunity to distance themselves from the mentally feeble current president, they double down and say, “they won’t change a thing.”
5.) You lie and say primarys can’t be held in 3-4 months
6.) You run a black women with the strategy of appealing to right leaning moderates. Moderates who look at the inherent bigotry in the GOP and say, “that doesn’t bother me.”
7.) You advertise that you’re endorsed by some of the most reviled conservatives of the last 25 years.
If you’re running a campaign please make a rule; ‘we will not doing anything that if a 7th grader read it a text book 10-20 years from now they would laugh about how stupid we were.’
I refuse to believe this party is so disconnected from reality that when faced with the threat of fascism, real fascism, this what they come up with.
You can hand the keys of the DNC to a baked potato and it would do a better job than current leadership.
I wasn’t always sold on the guy. He got a little too cozy with the “anti-woke” bullshit. But he always remained better than the best of that set, and somewhat distinct from them as well.
After seeing his Kimmel appearance, I’m convinced. Hand him the keys.
Was in the same boat for a while, still haven’t seen this appearance but he’s already turned that corner for me. Dudes one of the good ones it seems.
Insurance companies are taking the risk of offering insurance. That is why they normally make money year after year after year.
When bad things happen, they take the hits. They take on some debt. They stop making profits… because they decided to purchase the risk from people. That’s the gig.
There is a middle ground here that doesn’t bone homeowners and doesn’t completely bone the insurance companies affected. They should be taking on debt and making zero profits until they pay it off. That’s not how things work here though, i’m sure they will be bailed out on taxpayer money or something… but what should probably happen is that they should be given a federal loan on pretty favorable terms, something like 1-2% interest, until it’s paid off.
At the same time standards for homes in areas at risk should be such that fire mitigation is mandated whenever a house changes hands. This will inevitably drive up costs, but again maybe this is another case for low/no interest rate loans to cover the changes. A billion or two today could save 25-100-500++ billion over a few years.
what you dont see is the bailouts when disasters happen. Insurance companies only take the hits for small fires. Not for big ones. The have always made money hand over fist.
There is a middle ground here
There doesn’t need to be a middle ground. Most developed countries do fine with universal healthcare.
Help, my house is sick and needs a doctor!
As I already said, the exact same thing can apply to housing insurance.
You’re not incorrect, though his comment seems specifically targeted at home owners insurance.
Again, that could be government-sponsored.
I am pretty close to the opinion that all private companies need to be abolished and absorbed by collective ownership. There are almost no instances where I can see greed being the secret ingredient that makes things run MORE smoothly.
Louder for the people on the back, please!
That’s not how things work here though, i’m sure they will be bailed out on taxpayer money or something…
Insurance companies are typically reinsured themselves, so it’s entities like Lloyd’s of London that will ultimately be paying for this.
How exactly is this uplifting? Because Bill Burr said something? This means what? That change will happen, insurance companies will change their ways??? This sub standards are so low.
I would say its pretty unusual for a celebrity with a reputation, status and money on the line to be on the side of public opinion when it goes against what the people in power are saying. Its uplifting because his voice is louder than mine, i cant make an impact on my own and keep luigi out of jail. But with bill outspoken and on my team, something might actually happen.
standards are so low.
Dawg have you seen the news lately? Also Burr is an icon
Well then, what he said will solve it won’t it.
The cope…
Maybe there should be a community for Uprising News
Seeing stuff like this in the uplifting news community instead of shit like ‘local kid spends 60 hours a week selling lemonade to pay for sister’s cancer treatments’ is why I appreciate Lemmy vs Reddit.
That interview on Jimmy Kimmel has an obvious edit shortly after Bill says “free luigi!”. I’m not sure if the producers of the show cut the crowd reaction or something else Bill said, but something was definitely cut out.
I hope it was loud cheering.
No, they kept the cheering.
I’m not sure if they cut anything that he actually said, but it cut to what happened after they came back from commercial. I’m guessing it wasn’t a sloppy editing job though.
He’s definitely a bit of an asshole, but at the end of the day, from what I’ve seen from him over the years he does have his head on straight on a LOT of issues.
I don’t even think he’s an asshole, honestly. He just has no filter against stupidity.
Hard agree. I used to think he was just strictly a dick, but his introspection and growth shows he’s really honestly been thinking about things with as much empathy as he can muster.
Tbh that’s probably a big part of why I think his head on straight, because I’m kinda the same way in that regard
And the fact he can get away with it is what I love about the guy. He isn’t afraid to confront the hard truths we all are thinking about.
That’s a good point I think but I’d argue that’s kinda a recipe for an asshole. Especially if you think you’re always right and everyone else is stupid. Not that I think that’s really the case with burr (I mean he can definitely be a bit of an ass sometimes but who isn’t) and I don’t have much of a problem with him at all but I think you’re description kinda only makes a person conditionally not an asshole 😄
He’s essentially as close to Carlin as we’re likely to see.
There’s also Josh Johnson.
Jack Johnson’s brother?
No idea who Jack is, but Josh is a stand-up comedian who has been releasing a new hour of topical material on a near weekly basis for the last few years.
lol jack Johnson from early 2000 music, curious George soundtrack.
Shhh, that’s what people were saying about Dave Chappelle before, you know, all the stuff he’s said recently about trans people
Honestly the most annoying thing about the trans people shit is he just goes on and ON about it, and his jokes about it aren’t even that funny if you’re trying to look at it from a bigoted perspective. Like it’s not good material. It’s BORING dude. Why do like two whole specials where half of the time is you talking about it.
I assure you no one was saying that about Dave Chappelle. That dude has always been a racist jackass. He just happened to be funny for a short while.
I assure you people did say that, particularly on Reddit, after his 8:46 set. Just because you don’t like him doesn’t mean he wasn’t pretty popular at one time. The Chappelle Show could have kept going, it had strong viewership. When Dave returned to comedy after his hiatus he was mostly liked. And when he did his 8:46 set about George Floyd, his popularity hit an all-time high with everyone but the alt-right.
You’re not wrong about him being a jackass, and I would say bigoted more than racist, since his hate is broader than racism. But yes, people did laude him, for a brief time
I honestly thought Louis CK was going to take up the Carlin mantle. But instead he invited people up to his hotel room to watch him wank onto a mantle.
From what we know so far, Bill Burr is in a stable relationship and is a good parent. I want to believe that’s true.
Even if they didn’t know it.
Dave is an absolutely world class comedian, but I believe (and I’m pretty sure most of Lemmy would agree) his personal politics are trash.
Bill Burr is also a world class comedian, but I like most of his personal politics.
The problem is that unlike writing, music and movies unless you are on stage doing a “character” your personal politics IS your act and its very hard to separate the art and the artist.
He’s like my inner angry voice when I’m pissed off at something but as a person.
Is he though? I can’t think of any takes from him that I haven’t liked.
I do not care for him using homophobic and ableist words as insults, but he’s from Boston so it doesn’t surprise me that he does. Other than that, he seems like a decent guy.
What homophobic and ableist words does he use? I’m trying to think of times when he said one and nothing is coming to mind.
The one that starts with F and the one that starts with R. The famous rant that he had where he heckled all of Philadelphia is a very good example.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWuXfIZiSqY
It’s a very funny rant, but that part does not make me feel very good to hear.
Was pretty normal for the times. Back when I was a kid people used them as their go to insults. Like everyone I knew. I haven’t heard him say those slurs recently. Times change, people grow.
“For the times?” That happened in 2006. Times had changed long before that.
Maybe it’s growing up in a small town in Alberta and being a teenager back then, but the world has progressed a LOT in the last 20 years. Much for the better, but to pretend that it hasn’t is disingenuous man. Ask any lgbt+ person in their thirties or older if you don’t believe me.
He’s definitely gone into territory that I think some people find “offensive”, but I personally find to just be blunt. Maybe it’s the old school Bostonian vibe, which I understand as a Bostonian, and some people not from the region don’t necessarily.
So? People get so hung up on their right to remain unoffended. That’s not reality - it’s hiding. Our collective thin skin is getting shredded. We all need a dose of “wake the fuck up and smell the bullshit” more often.
Seriously I think it’s possibly a psy-op to make the left weaker in North America. Or at least to make leftists seem weak. At any rate it’s working, look at what’s happening to our political landscape as a result.
I mean, that doesn’t feel farfetched.
By the way, my friend had a hardcore band called “Crucifux” in Tampa Bay, FL area about 15 years ago. Your handle made me double-take.
Haha I know. I love hardcore, and found out about them from googling my own gamer tag when I was like 17
Hilarious. I played music with the drummer, Andy. Small world.
He’s actually a really good example of how to do shock humor without being a bigot. He doesn’t really punch down, and if he’s doing like race jokes, it’s usually through the lens of “look at how stupid this racist mfer is.”
For every American who gets offended at someone from Boston there’s a Canadian that isn’t a thin-skinned little bitch. ;) (okay maybe not a perfect metaphor but after the day I’ve had I’m not workshopping this one)
Always fun when Bill Burr makes a talk show host visibly uncomfortable. I’m worried they’ll stop having him on altogether. Supporting Luigi might be crossing the line. I dunno how Jimmy Kimmel feels about Luigi Mangione, but I know how the people who sign his paychecks feel.
If they can’t get people to hate Luigi, they’ll shift to getting people to forget about him.
I don’t watch Jimmy Kimmel, is he just a bad interviewer? Cuz he sucked. Even the introduction was bad.
Trump hates Kimmel because he dunks on him all the time
He was the guy what did the Man Show, right? The one that featured chicks on trampolines?
He’s gone downhill
I liked The Man Show, but I was also a stupid teenager.
The show that kept Joe Rogan in the public eye between fear factor and his podcast? Yeah, fuck that noise.
I think he did it during Fear Factor. He was the second grouping of hosts with Doug Stanhope after Corolla and Kimmel left
Correct, however at the time man show was fine. It was ruined by Joe and Doug. They made that show completely unwatchable. Their comedy just sucked ass compared to Jimmy and Adam.
Stanhope is incredible now but his style was 100% wrong for tv.
I dunno what this Joe Rogan is, but it sounds like something you’d put on a bald head to make it grow hair
Did you ever see Dogma? Do you remember the Shit Demon? A Joe Rogan is just the nice name we call them.
I dunno what this Joe Rogan is, but it sounds just like Raditz.
FTFY :D
I liked his commentary on those squirrel videos.
He doesn’t really interview, it’s just setting up four panel jokes. He uses the same vibe as his opening monolog
He’s too good for ratings. People tune in to watch him make the host uncomfortable
He was going off about CEOs being the new mafia, just mafia supported by the law this time around. And speculating on whacking between CEOs, like Walmart vs Target and such, pre Luigi. And then Luigi happened and he’s like: well yeah.
Really, it all fit with his pre Luigi narrative.
And the only comment on that article a bot decrying the horrible cold blooded murder and that a figure as visible as Burr should invoke the name. We’re all cheering the murder you fucks and no amount of pissing on us and telling us its raining will make us stop.
Sometimes I’m not sure if I’m a Bill Burr fan, but then he does shit like this and I go all Gaga for him.
A bad romance, you could say.
His comedy is pretty good. Not so much his old stuff but his newer stuff is amazing. Like his comedy or not, he’s always had a “fuck you” attitude about this kinda stuff which is why I respect him so much. The only comedian I know that calls shit like it is and calls out other people on their bullshit without giving a shit about what he says. He’s like the voice in the back of my head when I’m pissed off at something incarnate.
I followed him back on O&A and watched his small bits to his Breaking Bad stuff and everything… seen him like 5 times live. I love his body of work … old to new.
His “fuck you” attitude is one that makes me wish I’d have a friend like Bill calling my ass out. I love it.
His roles on The Mandalorian and Reservation Dogs were both very different and very good. On the Mandalorian he plays a former soldier who is basically Bill Burr in space. On Reservation Dogs he plays a high school basketball coach with a troubled daughter.
Yeah, feels like he is walking in Carlin’s foot steps but with his own cadence.
Capital-G Gaga? Like you put on a meat dress or something?
Are meat dresses made out of skirt steak?
👈👈😄
Clearly my keyboard thought so.
This is the interview: https://youtu.be/r7wcU4W4tDE
Thank you
He doesn’t say much that wasn’t cut out,
Here is a 1 min video from a month ago that goes into more detail:
He doesn’t say much that wasn’t cut out
My brain hurts trying to make sense of the negations in this conundrum. Thanks for that. 😞
It confused me a little too, removing both n’t-s makes it easier to understand.
He does say much that was cut out.
