Summary

Canadian Ambassador Kirsten Hillman expressed disappointment over Donald Trump’s newly imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, calling them disruptive to a strong trade relationship.

The tariffs, set to take effect Tuesday, are aimed at pressuring cooperation on immigration and drug control. Canada plans retaliatory tariffs on $107 billion in U.S. goods.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has not spoken with Trump since his inauguration. Hillman stressed Canada’s desire for continued partnership but warned of strong public demand for a firm response.

A lot of us think it’s to prepare for an invasion judging by how much 51st state bullshit he and his followers are spewing.

It’s to distract from all their treasonous crimes! The fact they’re illegally destroying countless government institutions, looting the public coffers, and giving Musk the keys to the kingdom. When the dust settles they’ll have seized control of everything important.

They aren’t gonna invade Canada or Greenland… At least, not for a few years; not until they’ve purged enough military leadership and replaced them with loyalists. I hope they are dumb enough to try in 2025 though. That might genuinely result in civil war. I can’t see the US military going along with it.

Trump ordering an invasion of Canada would be a lawful order–dumb as shit, but lawful as Commander in Chief. Military leaders who defy it would have no legal leg to stand on. They’ll grit their teeth and do it.

What he doesn’t trust about the current military leadership is that they’ll follow his unlawful orders. Like attacking civilians on American soil. An actual invasion of Canada would likely spurn widespread condemnation and protests, and Trump would like to shut that down using the military. Those are the orders that would be unlawful and should not be followed. He’ll want to purge the current leadership before he takes that course of action.

This. Numerous actions taken by the administration so far have been blatantly illegal or unconstitutional. Gotta muddy the water so no one has time to focus on that.

One of those groups keeps on voting for politicians to lead their party that enabled this so they can fuck off just as hard. American libs can downvote me all they want but the rest of the world is just totally sick of all of your shit man.

                You’re not entirely wrong.

But 3rd party voting is part of the contributor to the current predicament. It would’ve been better to vote for the lesser evil and buy some time to regroup and mobilize.

Would it have happened? I don’t know. But it probably would’ve been better than this.

Thing is, when we actually empower Democrats they don’t really do much of anything anyway. So the ‘lesser’ argument is getting tired. Thanks DNC.

Y’all had four fucking years to regroup and mobilize after you already had a Trump presidency as a warning. What exactly did you do with those four years except get mad at anybody who pointed out the democrats were also supporting genocide?

Dont pretend the rest of the world are saints. I live in Europe, we also have the rise of extreme right (fascism)… Less judging other people and more protesting. We need eachother, now is not the time for infighting.

I mean let’s be honest: That was not going to happen. Nobody regrouped or mobilized under Biden, even when he doubled down on genocide or when the DNC nominated him and then nominated Harris without a primary and tanked her campaign. Nothing I’ve seen in the final year of Biden’s term convinced me that anyone was going to do anything about the DNC except complain.

Right, and your solution to this is to scream and yell and curse around to everyone exactly like that oversized orange colored baby who got elected?

You do understand this affects you in every way possible too even if you are not an American, especially with Russian forces literally right on the door front of the Western Europe, don’t you?

No, the telling you guys off on the internet just makes me feel better. I’ve been volunteering at a local level for years, supporting local strikes, and currently I’m helping distribute lists of products that are made in Canada to combat this trade war at grocery stores. But I’m furious at Americans for allowing this to happen.

Trumps ego NEEDS the optics for himself to be strong, so he makes an issue where there is none to control the narrative and pressure other presidents. Like a bully calling someone smelly and fat in the lunch room. It’s not about this country or that country, he doesn’t care about anyone not named Trump. He wants publicly, other leaders to kiss his ring so he can make the stone cold steve austin X motion and say “suck it!” to anyone else.

OH also crashing the economy is good for billionaires who can absorb the hit without changing their lifestyle at all and just buy infrastructure and government works to privatize.

The tariffs, set to take effect Tuesday, are aimed at pressuring cooperation on immigration and drug control.

Canada would have cooperated already, that’s what having allies means. This is going to your neighbor and holding their dog hostage to borrow a cup of sugar - they would have done it anyway, but now you’re making an enemy for nothing.

And, since Trump announced that nothing Canada could do would stop the tariffs, the only explanation is that making an enemy is the point.

Unrelatedly, do we even have a way to track when Trump is talking with Putin at this point? He resisted having third parties present during the first term, but we still had notice of the conversations. The yes-men and lawlessness already means we probably will never know if and when they’re talking.

Fwiw mentioning, the level of fentanyl crossings is not even high, and is simply an enlarged wedge issue for the Trump administration to stave off dissuaders and forcibly push their way pass Congress to do whatever they want.
